Claudine is an outstanding film.
A gritty, hearty, heartful and ruggedly tender story of contemporary urban black family life avoiding blaxploitation genre. Here we have some too-real problems – Diahann Carroll as a 36-year-old mother of six trying to keep a family together without a man around; James Earl Jones as her garbage collector-boyfriend trapped in the immorality of the welfare system which encourages impropriety and discourages decency. The affair between Carroll and Jones is further complicated by various real problems with her kids. Eldest son Lawrence Hinton-Jacobs is torn apart by maturing black pride; daughter Tamu is experiencing her first adult female impulses; son David Kruger is on the verge of teenage dropout status.
