Broke my collar bone · 9:09am Nov 23rd, 2016
Bicycle keeps trying to kill me! Pain isn't too bad. Currently typing at about 2 letters per second, one handed. May be slow to update for a while.
So it is a really bad break. Snapped in half, with the two pieces jammed up against each other at odd angles. The doc said it might be possible to just let it set that way, but it'll never line up straight again. One person I happened to talk to did that, and it threw off their shoulder, which messed up their back, and years iater, they had to get it re-broken, to fix all that. So... the only other option is surgery, a plate and general anesthesia. No contest, right? Never been put under before, so it should be a fascinating experience, or lack thereof. Only thing I'm afraid of is if my (very) basic insurance refuses to help, because it "can" "heal" without treatment. I have a perpetually plugged nose, for instance, that they said fixing it would be "cosmetic." I can't blame them really, considering it was a $50 surgery and $10,000 for anesthesia. Been meaning to find a clinic that can do it for cheaper after you sign off all liability.
At a measured 0.65 characters per secondĀ one-handed, to type out a chapter should only be about 17 hours of focused effort. No prob, right? (I want to write so bad...) This little addendum here took me an hour and seven minutes. So... might not be writing much for a while. Doctor estimated about 6 weeks (after the surgery) for bones to knit.
Surgery on Wednesday. Hopefully will be approved. Ignoring my good health, statistically same chance of dying (permanently) from the anesthetic induced coma, as dying in a horrible car accident on the way to the hospital. Infection is the biggest concern, they said. Making me sterilize my whole body. Lots more paranoid than my last surgery. Biggest bummer is: finally off pain meds after 2 weeks, and now time for surgery! Oh, second biggest bummer is no bicycle rides for a year or more. So long, primary mode of transportation.
No, no biggest bummer is having to type one handed. I can't write stories! With 6 weeks of that to look forward to, almost be glad if the surgery kills me. Should go past 1 character per second eventually at least... (0.82 last I checked)
Surgery went ok I guess. Still in a iot of pain 25h iater. Typing one handed for the next 6 weeks.
Oh, dear! Sorry to hear that; I hope that it heals well and soon.
Ouch. I hear that's one of the more debilitating injuries that takes time to heal. I hope it doesn't last too long, as I can see that getting annoying fast.
Heard bad, bad things about breaking those. Take care, and get well soon.

Really? Like what?
Doctor can't see me until after the holiday, so no idea how bad it is. Can't be worse than when I broke the tibia in my ankle.

Mostly that since they're so hard to keep stabilized, you keep on tweaking the thing, and thus prolonging an already agonizing injury without really being able to do squat to stop it from happening.
So good luck.

I see what you mean. Some movement seems to help swelling and bloodflow, but definitely easy to tweak it. No agonizing pain, so
probably not a bad break. Maybe it'll heal on its own? Have to wait 4 days for more treatment than a sling, b/c Thanksgiving. Hopefully don't need any bone screws.Scratch that, it's a really bad break.you know what, no. I'm not going to be pessimistic about it. The pain is minor so it can't be horribly broken. It's probably just that thing where osteoblasts go nuts building up a bone ball to overcompensate for damage and only feels like two broken clavicle pieces stuck together. Ugh, really wish they'd let me see the X-rays...
