    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Birthday Bios: Sugar Glider · 2:39pm Nov 4th, 2016

I did initially have her birthday be October 30th, but I wasn’t really feeling well that weekend, so I rescheduled it (but I sure as heck wasn’t going to skip out on Wayer Rune’s bio on Halloween—good thing I was feeling better when I wrote that one!).

Anyway, Sugar Glider is so named because I like puns. Because, you know, pegasus with the talent of candy-making and selling and stuff—it was too good to pass up. Also, I couldn’t get enough of her sugary sweet yet kinda feisty doofus personality in The Rock Farmer’s Daughters.

Anyway, let’s get on with her little story.

Sugar Glider was born in Stratusburg, as the middle child of seven foals. From day one, she was a sweet baby, living up to her name in most of her interactions with everypony she met. She also had a notorious sweet tooth, and it was easy for her parents to find out who got into the cookie jar.

Throughout her foalhood, she’s had a bit of trouble being noticed by her parents, who were busy with their jobs, teaching responsibilities to her oldest brother, or tending to the youngest brother. She was often left with the other ‘middle foals’, consisting of both her bossy older siblings and her rowdy younger siblings. Thanks to this, she adopted a bit of a temper and a tendency of scaring ponies off with a stick or broom should they misbehave.

Given how her busy household drove her crazy, she went off to be apprenticed to Stratusburg’s local candy maker. While she liked being surrounded by candy at first, too much exposure to it made her rather indifferent toward eating it. However, she found that she loved making candy, and thus, she earned her cutie mark.

When the candy store fell into debt and was soon out of business, the candy maker asked her parents’ permission to send the then-teenage Sugar to his sister in Nickerlite. While Sugar was nervous about leaving her family and vice versa, she was ultimately given permission to go and broaden her horizons as she developed her talent.

She was sent to the little mining town soon enough, and met the Nickerlite candy maker, Candy Stick, along with her husband Sunlight Citrus and their son Lemon Drop. Much to her surprise, Lemon was not as sour as she expected a colt with his name to be. She liked his friendly nature, though a bit of a worrywart he may be.

As she worked with that family over the years, she got to meet all sorts of foals who came in for goodies. There was Cortland, the little Apple colt who liked caramel. There was Bluejinx, who held a fondness for licorice. And on occasion, there were the Pie fillies—Limestone enjoying the sour drops, Marble nibbling on mints, and of course, Pinkamena wanting to try everything. There was one other, but she didn’t really like candy, so Sugar never really remembered the name.

Pinkie was her favorite one, so she was sad when the filly and her sisters stopped visiting as they grieved over the passing of their grandmothers. She was happy when they were back—and that Pinkie was the first one to earn her cutie mark--only to be saddened by Pinkie going out to be apprenticed to a baker couple in Ponyville. Still, it reminded her of her own similar situation not too long ago.

Nickerlite had riffraff on occasion. Sugar didn’t hesitate to grab a broom and whack the offenders when they got too rowdy. Neither Lemon nor his parents could stop her; heck, in later years, not even pregnancy could stop her!

She and Lemon took over the shop on Lemon’s parents’ deaths in an accident. They closed the shop to grieve for a time. Sugar remained supportive of him even when he felt like it was too hard to go on. She made sure their transition to being shop owners ran smoothly, and that Lemon could live with the empty space left behind by his parents.

It wasn’t long before they realized they were in love, and soon enough, they wed.

They spent a few years in wedded bliss, working together in the candy shop and watching all the foals marching in. Naturally, seeing the kids made them want to have foals of their own. Once they decided that they were ready to be parents, they tried for a foal.

Five years into their marriage, their daughter Butterscotch was born. Little Butters was a sweet and cheerful baby like her mother before her, only to develop an attitude when she was a toddler. And of course, candy shop was ‘heaven’ for the filly, and Sugar and Lemon had problems controlling her behavior.

Then they had to divide their attentions when their son Jawbreaker was born, when Butterscotch was four. And then two years later, their third foal Taffy came along. Sugar had a small idea of what her parents had to deal with, and didn’t dare imagine what it’d be like to have seven foals. Three was enough for her and Lemon.

The years would sweep by for the couple and their kids. They had events like Butterscotch devouring the stock and spending the entire night throwing up, Jawbreaker having dental issues that would culminate in him getting braces, and Taffy making lots of new friends—some of which weren’t trustworthy and only used her to get free candy or mock her for her naivety. There was comfort and there was anger, there was laughter and there were tears, there was sickness and health, but above all else, there was love.

When Lemon started falling into chronic illness, Sugar had to have the now-adult Butterscotch run the shop. Sugar was dedicated to taking care of her husband until he eventually passed away. She made sure that he lived to see all three of the kids getting married.

And even in later years, she’ll still use a broom to whack anypony who annoys her.

A bumpy flight path, but clearly one worth the turbulence. Nice incorporation of recent canon into her history.
