[My Thoughts] Nintendo NX revealed! (Now called the Nintendo Switch) · 8:29pm Oct 20th, 2016

So yeah... this dropped today. Sorry for the the late reaction, guys! :derpytongue2:

I don't know about you guys, but this looks like one of the most creative things Nintendo has ever done. Well done, Nintendo; you managed to stay true to your hype and bring us something we will undoubtedly play for a good few years to come.

First and foremost, the rumors of it being a hybrid console of both stationary and portable were true. The NX... sorry, "Switch" (gonna have to get used to that now) uses a unique controller with interesting panels. These panels slide off the controller and connect directly to the Switch game station, which has a screen of its own. This allows you to take the Switch wherever you want to go, and when you're finished with the portable mode you can easily place the screen back onto the station and slide the panels back onto the controller.

Furthermore, the Switch screen has a stand on the back which allows you to place it down with ease, pull off the side controllers and play with two controllers in either hand like a pair of remotes, or if flip the remotes on their sides they become super-mini-controllers you can use to play with yourself or with a friend. Pretty cool, if I might say so myself!

Now, here are my pros and cons of this idea.

Pros:
The game screen for portable mode is immediately better than the Wii-U's.
Unlike the Wii-U, which had a semi-portable controller for certain scenarios, the Switch's game pad is literally the Switch, meaning you're able to take it anywhere you want without it "losing connection" or whatever. Genius!

There are two sets of buttons and analog sticks.
I've already covered that the placement is for the super-mini-controllers and whatever friends you may have over, but my guess is that these buttons on the regular controller are for left-handed people who find difficulty in playing controllers designed for right-handed people. Of course there have always been extra controllers on other consoles for left-handed people, but with the Switch you can have either one right off the bat without any extra charge.

The game graphics look GORGEOUS!
I would assume the engine is similar to the Wii-U's which is probably why its price is gonna be much lower than most other consoles on the market right now, but even with the Wii-U engine installed the games both on the TV and on the Switch screen look stunning. I'd expect no less from Nintendo, but that's a story for another day.

The game lineup looks great!
We've already seen Breath of the Wild, a Skyrim port, a new Mario Kart, a new Super Mario game, a basketball game and a potential Splatoon 2 being played in the trailer. I have nothing to say other than if THIS is an example of the lineup of games we're getting on the Switch, then my guess is the Switch will sell very, VERY well. But in my personal opinion, if the Switch had a main series Pokemon game in its lineup the console would sell like hotcakes.

Cons:
There is the problem of the screen being a bit big.
Normally this wouldn't be an issue for handheld devices, but because this is a hybrid console the thing is massive! Okay, it's not THAT big, but how does Nintendo expect us to carry it around as easily as, say, the original 3DS? I suppose they would come out with some kind of carrying case for it later, but until that day, I suppose.

The button locations are a bit awkward.
This has always been a thing in Nintendo's brain where they think the stranger the controller the cooler it'll be (just look at the N64). But if my theory on the left-handed option with the regular controller is correct, left-handed people will have to hold the main controller in a very awkward way and potentially make the experience even more uncomfortable. This can be solved with other controllers designed for left-handed people, but as per usual they'd probably just be sold separately from the Switch.

The game graphics look a bit too much like the Wii-U.
Though still stunning, the graphics are a bit too similar to the Wii-U's. I could only assume this is because the Switch is an improved version of the Wii-U and thus shares the same engine, but wouldn't it be great to see games like Breath of the Wild in 2080p at 60 frames a second? Still, the Wii-U has a great graphic's card, so no major complaints here.

It's all up to Nintendo in terms of games.
Like I mentioned, if Pokemon is on the Switch then the console is already a best-seller, but it really is up to Nintendo on which games it does and doesn't put on its game station. This can either mean a great selection of incredible games just waiting to be played (which already seems like the likely path) or a plethora of terrible games no one should be five miles close to. It's all up to you, Big N.

So, what are YOUR thoughts on the new Nintendo Switch? Put them down in the comments below!

Until then, this is SuperKamek signing off!

First of all, again sorry about PMing you about this. I got a little too excited and hoped to talk shop with you on it :twilightblush::ajsleepy:

Secondly, a few details I'd add.

1) the graphics are actually running on a Nvidia Tegra. Which is capable of 4k graphics, but I'm gonna guess it's 1080 on the portable. So I'd say (approximate guess.) That the Switch is actually more comparable to the PS4 or Xbox One.

2) the price is a bit of a concern. While I certainly doubt it will be too terribly expensive. I have to wonder if it'll be able to stay in the 300-350 price range, we'll have to wait and see.

3) what's the battery life on that thing? A portable screen running Skyrim at 1080? That's gonna be quite a battery drain. I think it'll be a decent size, but I am concerned about thaf factor.

4) Nintendo released a list of companies supporting Switch at launch. And it was pretty extensive. On the JRPG end, Square and Atlus are along for the ride. EA, Activision, and Ubisoft as well. Tell Tale, Level 5, and Arc System Works pledged their support. And tons of others as well, so clearly Nintendo isn't playing around with the third party support.

My personal take? Deffinetly gonna be more successful then the Wii U, at least based on first impressions. And I am very, VERY excited.

THE HYPE IS REAL!!!
Super creative console, potential MarioKart 9 and Splat2, and THAT third party lineup, also new Mario
Seriously, I'm in HYPEmode!

My blind reaction::derpytongue2::pinkiecrazy::pinkiegasp::pinkiehappy::pinkiesmile::rainbowkiss::yay::heart::pinkiegasp::pinkiehappy::derpytongue2::rainbowkiss::pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy::rainbowdetermined2::pinkiehappy:

Looks pretty good. If that Skyrim port has mod support, you can bet your ass that's what every PS4 player is going to switch to.

As someone who missed outon the Wii U, I must say that I am looking forward to this. I'm mainly a handheld gamer anyway, so my bigggest concerns would be battery life and methods of charging.

Switch to the Switch? :trollestia:

As someone who got the Wii-U during its final months of life, I'm dying inside. :raritydespair:

Go home, Stan. You're drunk.

4263867
What do each of those faces represent?

Totally alright, bro.

1. Really? Wow, did I get my details wrong or what? :rainbowlaugh:
2. It'll probably be around the 300-320 price range, TBH. New Nintendo stuff doesn't go for that much.
3. I think it'll be fine. And besides: I'm pretty sure it'll be better than the 3DS's battery life.
4. Holy moly! What games do you think we'll be getting from Square and Atlus, the kings of RPGs?

4263990
Even I don't know. My mind was all over the place. Let's just say I was glad I was alone at home.

4263996
Thank you.

1) Yep, I doubt it'll use the chip's full power for 4K stuff, but I do expect it should be closer to current gen systems then the Wii U was.
2) True, though the tech here is pretty impressive, I wouldn't be surprised if it goes to $400 tbh, but I don't think it'll go over that. I'd say 3-400 is a safe guessing range.
3) Heh, fair enough!
4) Honestly, I'm curious to see if Final Fantasy 15 will make it, but I'm more concerned with Tataba and Crew finishing up the polish before launch then I am about an NX port. I think Dragon Quest is very likely, given all the 3ds remakes as of late. And if Square doesn't allow Nomura to port KH 3 to NX, I will be severely disappointed.

And as for Atlus? Well that depends, usually what they do is localize more niche JRPGS, so we can expect some interesting JRPGS on the NX at least. And as for Atlus developed themselves? Possibly SMT 5, or if we're really lucky, we may get a unique spin off, now that all the big work on Persona 5 is pretty much done at this point, they may have some new art assets they can easily port over to the NX for spin off games. (This was how they made so many games on the PS2, they just reused the same demon designs from Nocturne for each one, with a few new sprinkled in each time.)

It does look interesting. I wounder what kind of future games we'll get.

I'm excited, but broke.

4263877
Oh even without news of mods I'm already switching to the Switch. Heck, even if I had an Xbox One I'd be going with the Switch. Portable Skyrim? Absolutely!

4264029
I've said it before and I'll say it again:

POKEMON

I would buy that shit in a heartbeat if a Pokemon game was released on it.

4264033
Good, so I'm not the only one.

4264263 Man, I stay broke.
