Thoughts on Nintendo Switch, My Little Pony, and Happiness · 3:25pm Oct 20th, 2016
Not sure if anyone will read this, but here we go.
I just watched the first look at the Nintendo NX, which has been revealed officially as the Nintendo Switch. I have to say, I am thoroughly unimpressed. And that saddens me a little. But that shouldn't prevent anyone else from being excited by the new console.
Long before the Switch's announcement, I had a resentment towards the console. Though it's difficult to explain why exactly, it probably has something to do with a feeling of betrayal. I'm a Wii U owner who has very much enjoyed my time with the console, but I acknowledge fully that the console has been a massive failure with little to offer once all has been said and done. I suppose I blamed that on Nintendo. Rather than work hard to attract developers and put themselves at risk with more first-party titles, they instead teased a fancy new console for months and months and prepared to drop the Wii U in its entirety. The fact that some of my favorite games were also going to be ported to this mysterious "NX" irked me. Now that I've seen the actual device, the only feeling I can muster is a dull grief. But hey, at least you'll be able to play Skyrim on the bus.
On reflection, my anger towards the NX while it was still the NX was unfounded and juvenile. This console that didn't exist yet wasn't wronging me in any way. It wasn't the NX's fault that the Wii U never fulfilled its potential. Now that I've seen the NX its official form, the Nintendo Switch, that anger has quickly evaporated away. I've realized something from watching the trailer. People should be allowed to enjoy whatever makes them happy.
If you liked the Wii U, that's good. If you didn't like the Wii U, that's also good. If you're excited for the Switch, great, if not, great. Because at the end of the day, it's about doing what makes you happy. There's a lot of unhappiness in the world and in everyone's life, and it's unfair on the part of anyone else to demand that they be unhappy in relation to something they're excited for. I think that extends to the very show that this site was founded on. It's no secret that Bronies faced a lot of negativity, and still do. But if the show makes you happy, then it makes you happy. If reading and writing fanfiction makes you happy, then it makes you happy. It's nobodies' place to tell you to not enjoy the things that make you happy or to enjoy things that don't make you happy. Whether it's games, cartoons, or any choice you make that makes you happy, keep making those choices until they stop making you happy.
