Or, "a one-shot I'll never write"

Not because I don't like it or anything; I just don't think it's a concept strong enough to stand alone as a piece. But I do find myself liking it enough to post in a blog, so whatever.

So, Ponyville. It's a Human in Equestria story which, let's be honest, is a black mark against it already. It stars a protagonist as the son of Princess Celestia. That's another bad sign.

But before you drop this and burn bridges with me, let me pitch it to you proper.

So, the story begins shortly before the return of Princess Luna. The years leading up to that event have been largely the same as in canon, with Celestia training Twilight as her student. There is just one big difference:

In this story, Celestia has a son; a tall, gangly creature without fur, horn nor wings, who walks on two legs. He's almost like the Ahuizotal creature in the Daring Do novels, we're it not for his lack of a tail. His name is Red Cape, and he finds himself struck with the sort of existential angst only a teenager can feel.

"Who am I? Why am I so different? And why can I lift a boulder over my head as if it's a paperweight?"

Those are questions Celestia has always hesitated to answer, but with her sisters return so imminent, her son deserves to know the truth.

"You're my child," she says, leading him down the winding passageway into the catacombs of Canterlot castle, "but you probably realise by now that I didn't carry you. I found you, when you were just a child."

"Where?" Celestia pulls a discrete switch, revealing another layer of the gemstone maze, and not answering. "Mom... where did I come from?"

Celestia lights her horn, a soft glow filling the room, reflecting off the gemstones, and the crystals...and at once, Red Cape can tell there is something different about these. Something cooler, less equine. More...alien.

"Somewhere far away,"Celestia says, gesturing at the metallic structure in the centre of the room.

Red Cape takes a step forward, hesitating. Everything here is so strange and yet, in dim, strange way, familiar? His hand traces a drawing carved onto the exterior of the metal egg...which suddenly responds to his touch.

It glows, soft but brighter than Celestia's horn. A sonorous voice fills the air. Celestia can't understand the words -they are strange, a language never spoken on Equestria- but Red Cape can. The words remind him of a time before, the touch initialising a speech long ago recorded into the machine.

"You will travel far," the voice says, wise and old and sad and, somehow, joyful. "My little Kal-El..."
