A few thoughts on EQG: Legend of Everfree · 6:17pm Sep 27th, 2016
I finally got to watch the new Equestria Girls movie (in a totally legal way, I swear), and I gotta say, they get better with every one. The plot was good, if a bit predictable, and the new characters were enjoyable. I'd honestly put this on par with Rainbow Rocks.
If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it. I do not, however, recommend reading past the break. Spoilers lie within. If you've seen it already or are okay with that, read on.
Still here? Good.
First off, the best thing about about the crew that made this is that they learn from their mistakes. Where the 'romance' (and I use the term lightly) between Twilight and Flash in the first movie was forced, SciTwi and Timber was how it's done. They have real chemistry and I honestly hope to see more of them in the future.
Also, Sunset and Flash had more chemistry in the short scene they had together than Twilight and Flash had in the previous three movies. Just sayin'.
The songs were also very good, though they're over shadowed by the music from Rainbow Rocks and Friendship Games. Forever Free was the exception, though. That song was amazing, only beaten by Welcome to the Show and Unleash the Magic in my list of best songs from the EQGverse.
The story was rather predictable, but not entirely. I knew right away that Timber was a good guy, but I honestly thought that Gaea was real, and that she was the source of the strange happenings. I also figured there was going to be a transforming villain, but that was only because it's kinda EQG's thing. Honestly, a part of me hopes they keep with that.
The girls' powers were great and mostly fit their characters, with the exception of Sunset. I don't see how seeing the past of anyone she touches fits her. That just felt like a cheap way to hurry the story along. Pinkie's was a little strange, seeing how destructive it is, but I can still see it.
The animation was one of the best things about it. Everyone had their own personality in the way they moved. Even their walks were personalized, like Rarity's sashay compared to Applejack's saunter. You could also tell they had all kinds of fun animating the facial expressions. I think their talent here is at an all time high.
The humor was spot on, funny and fun, but not taking over the show. I especially loved when Sunset used her power on Pinkie. I think she summed it up better than anyone could; That explains so much. The strongest aspect was that they didn't go too far with it. This wasn't supposed to be a comedy, and they kept it that way, focusing more on the mystery and using comedy to keep it from getting too serious.
They ended it with the girls saving the day getting magical necklaces. Yeah, am I the only one that noticed how opposite things are working in the EQG verse? In Equestria, Twilight brought together a group of ponies in friendship, in EQG a group of friends brought Twilight into the fold. In Equestria, they found some jewelry and saved the day, in EQG they had to save the day before they could get the jewelry. Maybe it's just me, but that may be something.
Or I'm reading way too much into nothing.
Now, I know a lot of people are going to immediately associate them with the Elements of Harmony, but I don't think that's entirely accurate. Though both are comprised of a number of colored crystals, these new 'Elements', for lack of a better term, act entirely different. The Elements of Harmony didn't imbue their bearers with individual powers, but a greater power came together from all of them together.
The question is, why give them these powers after saving the day.
I think they may be setting up a spinoff series.
Think, they have this strange, anomalous demographic of fans that they never intended to have. However, they can't just rework an already established franchise for young girls to better cater to an older audience. So, what do you do? You create a new, spinoff series made more with teens in mind, similar to Teen Titans or Avatar, the Last Airbender. It would be related, but the name Equestria Girls won't elicit the same ideas as the name 'My Little Pony', so they will be able to make something new and exciting.
I'm thinking we can look forward to a series that will maintain the spirit of MLP but with the freedom to be a touch more mature.
And Scooby Do references.
Fingers crossed.
That would definitely be interesting, but I think the kicker is the reveal of a 7th element in that world, think about it, many Bronies have been writing about a 7th element for a while now, and with this, they're literally getting their wish!
4229460 Like I said, I don't think they're the Earth's equivalent of the EoH. They behave completely different. They may be related to the Tree of Harmony, but they aren't the Elements.
4229545 Whatever the case, it's still gonna give the community an fit. As for a Spin-off series... it's funny but another Displaced author asked why the Equestria Girls weren't a TV series.
4229551 Well, this community, as much as I love it, throws a fit about everything, Twilicorn, the first EQG movie, Discord's redemption, Starlight Glimmer. Yet, most people love them now.
Also, the show's creators may have been building up to this to make a series. I feel that now they are in the perfect position for it.
