Every Little Thing She Does review · 7:43pm Sep 24th, 2016
Hello there. Another week another episode. This time we return to Starlight and her friendship tutelage under Twilight. The last time we looked at this dynamic it was an okay episode in my opinion. Nothing overtly wrong with it but it just seemed to tread the same path as the premier wherein Twilight tries to control everything, fails, and learns a lesson of her having to be more like Celestia and to step back a bit. Thankfully, this episode breaks new ground with Starlight. So, let's dive right in. My thoughts below.
This was a super fun episode. It somewhat reminded me of Lesson Zero. In both that episode and this one, Twilight and Starlight respectively attempt to complete a friendship problem only to have it blow up in their faces. It makes me think that magic is probably the most dangerous thing to friendship in Equestria, even with friendship being the most powerful magic of all. When you can force anypony to do whatever you want, it can get REALLY bad REALLY fast (like 'princess/demigod has to come and save the day' bad). Just because you have the power to make anypony do what you want, doesn't mean you should. As Uncle Ben (and Big Mac apparently) said "with great power comes great responsibility."
On that note, I loved all the comedy in this episode. From the pop culture references like the one above as well as "You're gonna need a bigger boat" to the blank stares and "yes Starlight Glimmer" that the characters would say (which was a little creepy), all the comedy hit right on the mark. Even Twilight and Spike, who weren't in a whole lot of this episode, got some big laughs from me. I'm betting Twilight's face when she tells Starlight it was really bad to cast a spell on her friends (which she should know all about) will become a meme in the near future.
I mentioned earlier that this episode broke new ground with Starlight and it has directly to do with Twilight. We're finally seeing Twilight step back and let Starlight make her own mistakes, but still be there to explain what went wrong. I mentioned that this is the same dynamic that Celestia and Twilight had in the first three seasons and it's gratifying to know that the writers are going to explore this dynamic between Twilight and her student without having to spell out every single time that it's the same one that Celestia had. All in all, this was a pretty fun episode which hopefully is foreshadowing more to come. Next time, we'll be looking at different points of view.
