Dungeons and Discords review · 7:05am Aug 28th, 2016
Hello there. Another week, another episode. This time around, the mane six are gone and Spike, Big Mac, and Discord of all characters have to find a way to entertain themselves for the night. Hilarity ensues. The way that Spike and Big Mac apparently pass the time while the others are out saving the world is playing a tabletop RPG called 'Ogres and Oubliettes'. As a gamer myself I have spent several days, nights, and weekends playing my own preferred dungeon delving adventure game, Descent. It's a lot more action and battle orientated than D&D but that's one of the things I enjoy about it. Anyway, back to the episode. My thoughts below.
This was a super fun episode. With most Discord episodes the writers and animators have a chance to throw in some main stream movie references. It happened last season with Make New Friends but keep Discord. The best ones in that were the Rodney Dangerfield and Dumb and Dumber references. Dungeons and Discords keeps up that tradition. There were two in particular that got a big chuckle and even a face palm from me. At one point while Discord is trying to be his usual controlling self, he teleports Spike and Big Mac into what looks like the club scene from 'The Mask' with Discord sporting a Jim Carrey-esque outfit.
The other moment that made me chuckle was near the end of the episode when the Mane 6 return from Yakyakistan to find the three boys fighting a large group of evil paper cutouts. Spike is dressed as a wizard (similar to Gandalf in LotR), Big Mac as a Dragonborn-esque character with a sword about as big as him, and taking the cake, Discord dressed up as Legolas. When I say dressed up, I mean the whole shebang (clothes, cloak, ears, hair, even the braid). That got a face palm and a chuckle from me and a chuckle out of my sister. Like I said, this follows the tradition of Discord episodes referencing things from our world (maybe Discord is actually Q from Star Trek: TNG in an equestria form. I couldn't really think of a moral to speak of in this episode. Just a pretty fun Slice of Life episode. That's about all for Dungeons and Discords. Next time, we're heading out to the old buckball stadium.
