I believe we have a new contender... · 5:11pm Aug 20th, 2016
... for best episode of the season!
Can you believe we've got not just one, but TWO great Spike episodes this season?
Everyone is in character, acting in just the right ways given their past experiences. Spike carries the episode perfectly. We've got social commentary going on, the pacing is perfect, the conflict flows naturally from the narrative. (Well, okay, Spike stumbling right into that cave in the first place is a plot convenience. But I can live with that.)
And the song at the end delivers all the emotional punch. Spike's first solo song. ... Alright, as a song it's a little lacking. But it did the job. Certainly made me misty-eyed. (In all fairness, though. Spike may win Best Episode of the Season, but we all know Luna has got Best Song already locked down.)
Well done, Kevin Burke and Chris Wyatt!
And well done, Spike!
Gosh, it feels good to have an episode that I can love without reservation after the recent, little slump.
AND we had a cool issue of Friends Forever this week as well! (Not perfect, but still fun.) I really needed that after the week I've had.
So, what are your thoughts on today's episode (and FF 31 if you read it)?
You'll find out.
Well, pretty much on point with how I viewed the episode, so I don't really have anything constructive to add, unfortunately.
A bit off topic, but I think I'm getting my mojo back, as I'm currently writing that Spike/Iron Will story I've been dragging my heels on for the past year.
I was just about to ask what you thought I adored this episode. I think the song was actually the weakest part, not because it was especially weak (just extremely sappy) but because the whole episode was so solid. Spike was great, and Thorax was great, and the moral was great, and that flashback scene was just AAAAAH
So good...
Re Friends Forever 31: I liked it, but it felt like it went by very quickly for me and I'm not sure why. I may have to read it again and think about it a bit. The mid-issue story was gorgeous, but apart from that the artwork felt kinda ho-hum. Since Tony Fleecs was writing, I was expecting a bigger focus on layout, panel borders, that sort of thing. But the story was interesting, the character interactions were fun, and it's always fun to see a neglected character get to take the spotlight.
I'm sorry to hear you've had a bad week :s Hope this uptick stays.

Glad to hear it.

Well, to me the mythical part of the story was incredibly powerful. So it made RD and Strongheart's journey feel somewhat pedestrian in comparison. (Which is an odd way to describe a journey through canyons, jungles and over enormous mountains to the end of the world.)
It's one of those times where I wish FF did two-parters. It would have definitely benefited from a couple additional pages.

Yeah, I felt much the same way. The myth was awesome. Outside of the myth, there was so much going on that each part of it felt a bit squeezed. Even though none of it was bad, it wasn't quite as effective as it could have been.
(Still squeeing over the episode. Squee! It basically never happens that I get impressed by the moral, but this time I was.)
I liked the episode.
I didn't like it. The problem is the very existence of changelings. They make no sense and have no place in MLP. I'm not saying that as a hater, either. I have very elaborate reasons why I think they're terrible.
By itself, I'd say the episode was pretty good. But as part of the bigger picture, it just doesn't work.

I know that wasn't directed to me but...

Lol, sorry, couldn't resist.
