Shower thoughts inbound! · 2:29pm Aug 14th, 2016
I was taking a shower this morning when I got to wondering...
How many gigabytes of memories/knowledge does my brain hold?
Has anyone else though about this before? And if so, do you know the answer?
The smallest changes can make the biggest difference.

Most computational neuroscientists tend to estimate human storage capacity somewhere between 10 terabytes and 100 terabytes, though the full spectrum of guesses ranges from 1 terabyte to 2.5 petabytes. (One terabyte is equal to about 1,000 gigabytes or about 1 million megabytes; a petabyte is about 1,000 terabytes.)

That's about all I could find as well.
Actually, you're both wrong. The brain doesn't really store anything except reference files, everything else is stored in the cloud.

Now stop fidgeting over your existential dilemma and pass the soap...

I'd imagine it would be really hard to estimate that because, as far as I know, we're not actually sure what information the brain is storing in the first place and how it would translate to space on a drive. A huge portion of our memory is dedicated to muscle signals. I.E. the familiar commands our brain sends to our entire body to keep it functioning, as well as the ones we consciously send, like those to our fingers to type on a keyboard. The nature of such signals would need to be quantified into bits and bytes to get a better estimate.
Furthermore, there's also reference memory (such as recollection of events, face recognition, etc.) and mixes of both (like language, which requires references to words and language as well as the muscle memory to use it). Our neurons, how we store information, would need to be compared to bits to estimate how much space we have, and how much is being used by all those various types of signals.
Personally, I think we're more in the range of penta or hexabytes. But that's my opinion.

All the things you listed is exactly why I didn't even attempt to estimate.
Not to mention the fact that I lack proper education on the brain.

Fine...

4152344 Oh I'm no brainiac myself. I googled the terminology as I was making the comment just to be sure I wasn't saying the wrong things.
Though I have a basic neural and cognitive understanding, it's enough for me to know I'm completely out of my depth and enough to have fun speculating with while still sounding smart.

Oh. Not what I was thinking. WELL! I pressume that a few Terabytes are avaliable, from wich we only use a few gigabytes or so. unless you're capable of memorizing every single word of a library of encyclopedias. Then mate, you've got the secret to unlock our full brainpower.

The pun be real.

It could be if you want it to be, bby.
