Wishing for a spoonful of sugar... · 11:37am Aug 13th, 2016
This kind of thing isn't something I usually do, but I felt the need to get the thoughts out somewhere. Feel free to read or ignore as you will.
After half a year, (or a year and a half, if you want to go from her introduction,) I've finally gotten over my intense distaste for Starlight Glimmer enough to watch Season 6...
Having caught up, I still feel Starlight is a rip-off of DIscord's redemption, Sombra's comic backstory, and pretty much every aspect of Sunset Shimmer, but I admit her being sort of out-of-touch with other ponies like in 'A Hearth's Warming Tale' is a refreshingly unique trait.
I still feel that there was no need to create her, rather than using Sunset Shimmer, (especially since the Sunset born in the human world is still unaccounted for,) but sometimes you have to swallow a bitter pill to get dessert later.
I mean Friendship Games is proof they acknowledge Sunset Shimmer's popularity in the fandom by having her actually star in the movie as the main character. With that in mind, it's baffling to me why they refuse to include her in the show. They can't deny the canonicity of the movies because of the after-credits scene in Friendship Games unlike the comics but that's something Sunset fans like myself are just going to have to suck up.
Besides, fan fiction exists for that very reason, to explore the ideas the show/comics/movies could have done but didn't, wouldn't or couldn't.
4147466 Indeed. If they insisted on not acknowledging the human world in canon, they could simply bring in the other Sunset and wipe her memories or something. But then, that would actually give us something creative in canon, and we can't have that.
Still, as you said, that's what the fandom is for.
