Whether a character is exquisitely delightful or exquisitely painful, it is an antagonism. It urges to create a balance.
Balance is impossible for some characters, so they dream of others who might someday achieve it.
If there were no such thing as night, there would be no word for day. They will continue to suffer for the presumption otherwise, until they're reconciled.
What is the proper way to consume cultural artifacts? To which master text are we to be faithful? Aren't lamentations as poignant as idylls?
Even as we read, we are writing.
