A couple of reviews. · 7:29am Jul 22nd, 2016
I watched The Legend of Tarzan earlier today. I liked it and I felt it was a good sequel to the original Tarzan story. Some good points:
1. Tarzan was a badass and very intelligent.
2. Jane was not a helpless damsel in distress and and kicked ass. Even when she was captured, she did her best to hinder the bad guys.
3. The African tribes were depicted with respect and dignity.
4. Samuel L. Jackson's character was absolutely hilarious and kicked ass.
5. The main villains were badass. Seriously, one of them killed an armed warrior much larger than him with a freaking rosary!
6. The animals and the scenery were so gorgeous.
I've also been checking out this manga called 7th Garden. It's an interesting story about the nature of faith and what you would do to survive and protect your personal world, or garden.
Basically, it's a world that resembles something like the Middle Ages, but with more modern clothes like in Akame ga Kill. Awyn Gardner is a surprisingly skilled warrior with a dark and troubled past. However, he is content with simply serving his mistress, Mary, whose rich family took him in, as their gardener. When corrupt members of the Church order a purge on their village, salvation comes from an unlikely source, a demon woman named Wurde (the spelling of her name varies according to the translation, but I pick this one). Wurde offers him a deal, she gives him the power to defend his village, and in exchange, he helps her on her quest to kill the six angels who betrayed her and cast her out of Heaven. Without hesitation, he agrees, saying he doesn't care about anything except keeping Mary and the rest of the village safe. It soon becomes clear that nothing is as it seems. Wurde constantly rants about her revenge and also constantly tries to get Awyn to let go of his compassion and virtue in battle, yet shows a more caring and vulnerable side, and even heals the bystander casualties of their battles. The angels are complete assholes who callously manipulate human lives for their amusement, tricking them into killing their fellows by claiming it is God's will. The angels and demons also have access to advanced technology like ray guns, computers, and headphones that baffles the humans. There is also a slight harem element as Wurde takes on human form and gets a job as Mary's maid, leading to Mary, Wurde, and another maid competing for Awyn's affections.
As more books/chapters are released, I'm eager to find out what exactly is going on.
"3. The African tribes were depicted with respect and dignity."
Thank goodness, that's something hollywood has always struggled to do.
4106320 Yeah, they were all smart and just like any other person.
