RIP AND TEAR SIMULATOR 2016 (DOOM) REVIEW · 11:36pm Jul 16th, 2016
Welp, given that I've just completed the game, I figure I may as well share my thoughts...
Fucking. Awesome.
The story is a little flat but that is easily remedied through the in-game codex entries which provide a much better insight to the game's world and characters (should you sit down to read them all). But of course, who is playing it for the story?
We all know the real reason anyone plays this game. And that is to rip and tear your way through every single demon in sight. It is a majestically violent, enemies exploding into red paste as you use your tools of destruction to carve a path through the armies of Hell.
With regards to the action, it feels very reminiscent of the original, with a few additions such as double jumping, actually looking up and down, and the new weapon mods that you can find throughout the game that provide additional ways to deal with your enemies. On top of that, the new bosses as well as all of the enemy types, both old and some new, help the game to fit right in with its predecessors.
The game is also loaded with secrets, including but not limited to; secret, classic DOOM levels, mini DOOM guy figures that give you character models, Praetor Suit tokens that let you upgrade your suit, Easter eggs and many more.
Back to gameplay elements, it comes with the return of two classic weapons: the chainsaw, which you use to instantly kill enemies which results in a massive spilling of ammo, and the age-old legend: the BFG-9000. Both of these weapons are very limited, however. So you need to think about when you're going to use them. For example, if you're completely out of ammo and desperately surrounded, use the chainsaw to get a quick boost so you can kill some more. Or, if you're really desperate, pull out the BFG and fire a single shot to wipe out a massive crowd of demons (provided it doesn't direct impact anything on the way). I for one like how id Software managed to integrate the weapons into something of a strategy, rather than just going in with a chainsaw and cheesing your way through the level. You need to actually think about what you're doing, and standing still will get you killed very quickly. However, given practice, you'll have as much fun as I did (even if I got super salty, as I played the game on Ultra-Violence for my first run).
It is such a fantastic experience that I have no choice but to give it a very solid 10/10.
