    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Birthday Bios: Summer Wind · 4:20pm Jul 9th, 2016

Welp, looks like we’ve got ourselves a Grade A pega-nerd folks. Seems to me like those are kind of scarce.

Summer Wind was born in Manehattan to the mixed couple of Hefty Move (earth pony) and Weather Belle (pegasus). A cozy apartment was what she called home for a long time, with many memories made there like when she first walked, when she first hovered, and when she started to actually fly. Her parents kept a lot of pictures of their little girl, and often had them stashed nearly everywhere at their workplaces, annoying their coworkers.

From day one, Summer was a curious filly. She wanted to learn about how the world around her works, and she was going to savor every new thing that she learned. Whether it be asking her father about construction materials, her mother about the business she worked for, or discovering some kind of new plant at the park, she was happy to get to know more.

As her parents were often busy, she was often babysat by her neighbor. Said neighbor let her look through picture books, and when Summer learned to read, took her to the library to browse whatever subject she was curious about at the time. Eventually, Summer was taken to a bookstore owned by the neighbor’s friend, Madame Bookshelf.

The little pegasus befriended Madame Bookshelf through a mutual love of learning and reading. The old unicorn found her charming as she hovered her way through the bookshelves and flipped through books, mentioning that she read a book from the library, and came here to see if she could buy a copy. Summer liked to mention whatever new thing she learned to her, sat with other foals during story time, and kept her company as much as she could.

She has gotten in trouble for going off on her own without telling anypony. There was a good chance that she could have run into the many dangers of the big city, whether it be being caught by a sick-minded pony, crashing into a building when she’s not paying attention to her surroundings, or even landing in the wrong spot. So, she always had to be with a trusted adult when going off to her favorite places.

She was excited to start school to learn more. At first, her school days were like heaven as she got to learning lots of new concepts and made a couple equally eager-to-learn friends. On the other hoof, some foals that were jealous of her smarts and found her lisp funny took to picking on her. It got worse when it was discovered that she needed glasses at around eight, and thus, many bullied her for being a nerd. Some even taunted her for being mixed tribe.

Some foals plucked her feathers, justifying their actions as “no pegasus is a nerd, so you don’t deserve your feathers.” Some stole her glasses, taunting that ponies only need two eyes. And there were classics such as splashing her with mud, pulling her mane and tail, and snatching any book she held from her hooves. She often came home crying over the torment she received, and sought comfort in their little toy poodle, Curly.

One day, she had just about enough of the bullying, and smacked one of her bullies. To her surprise, she sent him flying, which resulted in injuries that required hospitalization. She got suspended and grounded by her parents for doing that, as sending a kid to the hospital is a huge no-no.

Still, she got curious about her sudden strength, and tested how much she could lift. She got scolded by police for uprooting trees and lifting statues and boulders in the park. It was bizarre how a pegasus could wield such strength, and she has theorized that being half-earth pony gave her super strength. Classmates thought so, though the adults weren’t so sure. Either way, the bullying was toned down out of fear of Summer.

When she was eleven, her class was part of a reading buddy program. While she was paired up with a cute little filly at first, the buddies of some of her lazier classmates were drawn to her, as she was more invested in the reading than her classmates. She was happy to answer any questions of the young foals, and spouted some fun facts for them. Realizing how much she liked giving them new knowledge, her cutie mark appeared, as her talent was bringing knowledge to new minds like the wind blows seeds to new places.

She was happy to show her new cutie mark to her parents, her neighbor, and Madame Bookshelf. She was at first eager to follow it, but accosting strangers to give them a random fun fact is not exactly welcome in Manehattan. She had to be told that there was a time and a place for her talent, and that she needed to find one instead of annoying ponies.

She has both volunteered at the library and worked at Madame Bookshelf’s bookstore as a teenager, when she was of age to be going out on her own. Any foals she met she was happy to read to and impart new knowledge to. She was tickled pink when a foal comes to her and gives her a little fun fact, and she encouraged them to learn about their interests. The only thing that foals did that annoyed her was play with the large pigtails she wore at the time. She hoped that those foals would grow up to better Equestria.

Her employment at Madame Bookshelf’s was interesting. She was an adept multi-tasker, with stocking shelves, running the front desk, and threatening vandals with her super strength all part of her resume in that one little store. But hey, more time among books of all kinds and more time with foals were part of her dream, and she was happy her old friend could be a part of it.

One day, Madame Bookshelf decided to hire a second pony to the small staff. Summer was introduced to her new co-worker, Tomato Sandwich, soon enough. While meeting a grumpy pony in Manehattan was no surprise, she found him a curious character. He was aloof, focused on work, and not interested in making friends with her. On the other hoof, he was apparently doing all he could to stay at work longer, showing more discomfort in going home than staying at the bookstore.

She has poked and prodded at Tomato to try to discover more about him, much to the colt’s annoyance. He was still clamped shut, and tended to snap whenever she ended up asking a question that was a little too sensitive (like why he was reluctant to go home). Madame Bookshelf has scolded her for being nosy, and him for yelling.

Summer still tried to befriend him, though more in the way of random trivia that Tomato didn’t care about, telling a joke, or trying to start a discussion on whatever novel came to mind. The last one was often the most successful, as Tomato himself was a bookworm and had an idea of what worked and what didn’t. She has asked if he wanted to write a novel, but he always answered by pointing to his cutie mark and asking, “Does this look like the mark of an author to you?”

The only time she actually got him to smile was when she brought Curly to work. He basically squeed and petted the little poodle as often as he could (Curly relished in the attention). After that, he was embarrassed that he let himself do that and that Summer has remarked that he has a cute smile.

She hasn’t admitted it to anypony, but she had developed a massive crush on him. With both being nerdy bookworms, she has daydreamed that if she could get him to crack, then a relationship would work out between them. Had Tomato known about the crush, he wouldn’t have been so optimistic about it.

Eventually, a big bookstore chain opening up and drawing customers away from the little bookstore, as well as the city requiring business owners to raise wages, put a strain on Madame Bookshelf. Even after the efforts of all three to save it, the bookstore went out of business.

It wasn’t long after that Summer got word of Madame Bookshelf getting sick, and told Tomato when they met up at the library. Later on, she got news of her mother getting transferred across the country to manage a business in a town called Aura Springs, located somewhere between San Franciscolt and Los Pegasus. She felt bad for having to leave her friends, but she had little choice in the matter.

Before long, their former employer passed away, and the two attended her funeral together. As the two parted, she mentioned that her family was moving, and Tomato only replied with a sigh and, “Of course.” She had no idea what he meant when he said that.

She found Aura Springs to be a nice place, being a fair-sized town with a nature reserve and hippie commune on the side. She went on to volunteer at the local library, befriending the librarian, Kimono. Ponies seem to be a little too busy to visit the library, which is a little disappointing, but Summer does love the selection of books that are there.

After a couple of years (and a haircut), she enrolled in a San Franciscolt college, aiming to become a teacher. Between studying at that school during the school year and volunteering at the Aura Springs library, her life is full.

Cool girl.

I always enjoy seeing your many OC's: they remind me that not everyone feels the need to make their characters super snowflakes.

I lovely little bio

Now I hope Summer Wind meets up with Tommy again, preferably while Flora is around as well...

There aren't nearly enough peganerds out there. Thank you for helping to address the shortage. Add me to the list of those hoping Summer and Tommy cross paths again.

I LOVE THIS PONY! These types of characters are always my favorite. X3 Maybe she should meet Ash Tree...? He seems her type, quiet and artistic. That was just a random idea that came up XD

Or Black Diamond...? He would work, too.
