OC Spotlight: Crystal Clear · 1:03pm Sep 7th, 2012

I'm starting a new blog thing, where I'll take one of my OCs, and basically write their biography and/or the technical details behind something odd about them. I shall start with my first OC pony, Crystal.

She is a pegasus, but I was watching a certain MythBusters episode (friction ignition of denim, the one where they dragged Tory behind a horse FOR SCIENCE) while making her and figured, "eh, why not? Psychic ponies." (The MythBusters asked a "psychic horse" to predict the outcome of the experiment before doing it.) I spent about a month total figuring out the specifics of this "psychic" ability, and eventually settled on it being a family trait, exhibited only in females, though males carry the trait on and give it to their daughters. Every female has a single, different power, which manifests itself only once they earn their cutie mark and this power is connected to their Cutie Mark in some fashion, though potentially the picture on their flanks may be the only connection to their normal pony Special Talent.

Anyway, on to the individual pony I'm talking about this time.

Theme Song:

Her name is Crystal Clear, born Christina Diamond Clear. Her Cutie Mark is a crystal ball, a result of fate deciding to get in on an in-joke among her friends about her having a crystal ball hidden in her basement. Her talent is actually reading nonverbal cues like body language so well she seemed to be a mind reader or empath to those less perceptive, resulting in a joking rumor she looked into everypony's futures and minds at night using the crystal ball hidden in her basement. and destiny (read: I/me) decided "eh, why not, what would a body-language-reading mark even look like?" and placing the oft-joked-about ball on her flanks.

Originally from Cloudsdale, her family moved to Fillydelphia when she was 6 when her father was transferred between the two towns' police departments. Spending the majority of her life in Fillydelphia, Crystal graduated from Filly U with a Psychology degree, with a minor in Marketing, and started her own psychiatric office as a way to help other ponies using her unique gifts.

She is very kind and motherly to her friends as well as any children, her own or otherwise, offering them a safe haven from malevolent pursuers whenever needed in the form of a hidden back room at her offices in the town plaza, the primary purpose of which is being an overnight living area if she stays out too late organizing the files on her patients again. She usually does this due to her deeper-than-normal, not-quite-empathic understanding of others' feelings, and her natural propensity to help others in need reacting to fear.

After a few months running her psychiatric service, her old high school coltfriend finally got back from his own college, and they hooked back up after the brief reunion, and it was then that she presented him with their daughter, Sylvia Cloudshadow, who was made on their last night together before splitting for different colleges. They then married and had a son, Quincy Quill. We'll cover Sylvia next time, but I need to get permission from their owner before I even consider doing it with Quincy or Chester. We already agreed on the whole married and kids thing.

Crystal's psi-power is a sight-based one, and a form of absolutely foolproof identification. Activated at will, but works only for about 30 seconds at a time, 5 times an hour, and a sixth use will not only fail, but also leave Crystal with an 8-hour migraine headache. While active, her eyes take on the exact same color as Nightmare Moon's eyes. However, (and I can't stress this enough since Chester's owner took a week to figure out it was mentioned 15 times) HER EYES DO NOT CHANGE SHAPE TO NIGHTMARE'S DRAGON-SHAPED EYES. After Nightmare Moon's return at the 1000th Summer Sun Celebration, Crystal decided not to let anypony see her using it, for fear they start a riot or something declaring her an underling or Nightmare Moon returned in disguise, or just stop being her friends out of fear. It doesn't help that the only description Crystal can provide for what she sees in this state is "that pony is on fire."

To make it seem less like pyromania to others, she calls the "flames" auras. Auras are constantly flowing, as the owner calms, the aura flows more smoothly, agitation causes auras to flare erratically. Every aura is unique, differences include:
• Where on the owner the aura is centered. (Head, heart, flank, right front hoof, etc.)
• Color (Red, blue, green, yellow, puce, beige, white, black, pink, etc, any of the 16,777,216 different colors in the RGB sliders is possible.)
• Orientation of the "flame" from owner's perspective (front-to back, back to front, left-to-right, right-to-left, up-to-down, down-to-up,and any diagonal angle in-between)

When a changeling disguises as somepony, a blocky, pixellated, and transparent copy of the impersonated pony's aura is superimposed over the changeling's own.

Among the Aura Sight ability's uses are, as mentioned, an identifier that not even a changeling can reliably fool, though a changeling can get away with it if they aren't the pony Crystal is focused on. Another application used semi-frequently is In combination with her cutie mark talent of reading body language, Crystal can use this to flawlessly determine another's emotional state. Their body language shows what the emotion is, their aura reveals only how intense the emotion is by its speed of its flow.

So, yeah, that's the important bits of her current incarnation's character. I may edit this post as other aspects of her home RP-verse become set in stone and clear. Feel free to take this Spotlight deal and write it into your own blog, but I will not do this for your OCs, since I don't know anything about them.
