New Magic = Alicorn
Argument: "Starswirl should be about 60 kajillion Princesses by now, then!"
Response: No. He shouldn't. He made SPELLS. Not magic. I find this easiest to say in a car design analogy.
Magic : Spell :: Fuel : Engine
Starswirl constantly invented new ways to burn gasoline in an internal combustion engine. No Princessness granted because folks have been doing that since the ICE was invented.
Twilight designed an engine that generates power using H2O, regular-ass motherfucking water, as the fuel source instead.
The change from 1 alicorn, to 4.
I will now explain this as clearly, concisely, and calmly as I can. Three lists and an explanation should do.
The Four Loves:
Phileo, Eros, Agape, and Storge

Friendship, Romantic, Unconditional, Parental
The Four Alicorns:
Twilight, Cadence, Luna, Celestia
See what I did there? Each Princess represents one of the Four Loves.
Twilight got her wings for creating a new form of magic powered entirely by Friendship. (End of MMC)
Cadence can rekindle the burning fires of a couples's love for one another, and the Crystal Empire, HER ENTIRE KINGDOM, pretty much is powered by Love via the Crystal Heart. (Royal Wedding, Parts 1 & 2, The Crystal Empire, Parts 1 & 2)
Celestia cares for every single last ponies in Equestria as if they were her own foals. (Royal Wedding, Part 2; vs Chrysalis pre-fight speech)
The fandom has no true restrictions on why Luna is awesome. (Her suddenly characterized self in Luna Eclipsed should have made a schism in the fanbase even more irreparable than the one in the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG fanbase. We all united under our love for the Lunar Princess regardless and avoided that.)
