And I got a new keyboard.... · 2:39pm Jun 28th, 2016
So I gave in. I said I wouldn't buy until two weeks from now, but I gave in and bought the Razer Black Widow Ultimate keyboard. Why did I buy it? I wanted to find out how other mechanical keyboards feel, for one. After using this for a few hours, I noticed that the keys are much easier to press than the ones on the Dragonwar Atomos. That is because the Atomos has keys that need 60g. of actuation force as compared to only 50g. for the Black Widow Ultimate. Which is strange, since the Atomos is using Kailh Blue switches, which is the equivalent of the Razer Green switch (which is incidentally also made by Kailh). Both switches are the equivalent of the Cherry MX Blue switch.
The one I have also has green backlighting, whereas the Atomos has a variety of colors for its backlighting. The Atomos also has the secondary symbols lighted as well, whereas for Razer only the main symbols are lighted. I hope that later Razer would have the secondary symbols lighted as well in their coming keyboards.
One thing that I would suggest for Razer is to be less reliant on the Synapse software. It is a nice software really wherein you can configure the keyboard for different lighting effects and key mapping, but on the Atomos it is all done on the keyboard itself without any need of a software. That could be crucial since if there would be problems with the software, it might render the keyboard useless. I don't really know if that would be the case, but it is a possibility. With the Atomos that won't be any problem since all configurations are on the keyboard itself. Perhaps Razer can have some of the configurations (like turning on and off the lights) on the keyboard and the effects through software, or else have both on the hardware and software so as to have a backup in case one has an issue.
Overall though I am happy with the new keyboard. Perhaps I would even be more happy if I got the Black Widow Chroma Overwatch edition, but that is one expensive keyboard although I am still planning to get it this July. Call this a test run of a Razer product. If it all works out and I am more than satisfied, then I will get the Overwatch keyboard. It would just be too bad if I did get that keyboard only to be dissatisfied with it.
As for the Atomos, it will be my backup keyboard. I will still customize it, or perhaps this but more likely that one. I have seen Cherry MX compatible keys, both in orange and red colors. That would be good for my planned Sunset Shimmer-inspired keyboard. Painting might be a challenge though since it would mean taking the keyboard apart completely, something that would be more challenging on a mechanical keyboard than a membrane one.
So, anyone who has experience with Razer keyboards, do you think I made a good choice? Do note though that mechanical keyboards are not as plenty here, so I have to get one that is available. So far I have seen the steelseries keyboards (using Cherry MX Red and Black, though I don't think I would go for a Red switch since I am more of a typist than a gamer when it comes to keyboards), and I did see a Das Keyboard with Cherry MX Blue but it's a TKL keyboard and not a full sized one. There is also the Filco Majetouch 2 that I saw but then at that point I have been considering one that has backlighting.
