People like to speculate on where in the distant past G1 occurs. That is to say, there's got to be a time long before Twilight and long before Equestria, when ponies and humans walked together, and witches were motivated merely by who could be the most evil. Well, here's my take on the whole prehistoric G1 theory.
The Moochick is an interesting fellow.
He might be human, but he'd be a very oddly shaped human if he was. The Moochick, also known as "Mister Moochick" is a quirky sort of dwarf/gnome wizardish guy who assists the ponies and provides a sort of comic foil, never really solving their problems, but often his advice leads them to the solution. He didn't stop the Smooze, but he assisted them in learning of the Flutter Ponies, who were the only thing that could stop the Smooze. By uh, blowing it away. (Yes G1 was stupid, I know. Shut up.)
The Moochick has some very peculiar magic.
He casts strange, whimsical spells that seem very arbitrary, and never do the same thing twice. Despite his bumbling and forgetfulness, he seems virtually omnipotent, and with a disturbing love of extra-show references, he does stuff like this.
(The Astrodome? Really? )
Tirek is also from G1.
In it, he uses the Dark Rainbow to turn ponies into monstrous slaves... in a scene that turned me off to transformation for a while. Me.
While Tirek was trying to make My Little Pony metal, The Moochick was already aware of this, but there wasn't much he could do to help. All he had was the advice that they steal Tirek's bag, and just a little teeny piece of rainbow.
They utterly failed to steal Tirek's bag.
So the only thing they had left to try was that piece of rainbow.
A Rainbow of Light.
Yeah, that was my reaction to what happened too. The Rainbow of Light completely owned him. It tore out all of the darkness that he had infected the earth with, and its creatures upon it. And when it was all over, there was only one thing missing from the world. Tirek. My guess is that there was so much darkness in him, that when the Rainbow removed it from him, there was nothing left. But here's where the G1 prehistory theory runs into a little snag.
There was nothing left. It didn't leave Tirek's face on the moon. It didn't seal him in stone. It didn't lock him in prison. His stratodons plummeted out of the sky, with no rider in that chariot. The Rainbow of Light completely annihilated him. So it's impossible for G1 to come before G4, because Tirek died.
Furthermore, if you consider the comics to be canon (please don't) then G4 Tirek's life before he met the ponies has been covered, too. All the way back when he was a powerless little prince, before a nasty wizard gave him the secret to eating magic.
So, obviously G4 has to be an alternate reality, since the characters are different from G1, Nightmare Moon instead of Tirek, Tirek instead of Grogar, that sort of thing. There are just plot elements that prevent G1 from ever coming before G4. Where was Celestia, in G1? Was it before she existed? That's over a thousand years! Where was the tribal warfare? Before that, too? You have to go so far back, you basically are just picking an alternate reality anyway, since there's no history at all indicating that G1 came before G4.
Though, I was thinking about The Moochick again, how peculiarly familiar he is. Because he's seemingly omnipotent, but surprisingly powerless against things like Tirek and the Smooze, both of whom he has a long history with. His power is wild and unpredictable, but has its own unspoken limits. Friends with the ponies, but not a pony himself. He's kooky and comedic, while also playing an integral role in saving the day, in the background.
Despite all his amazing powers, The Moochick lives in a quaint little cottage with a green roof, right outside a swamp.
And he has a pet rabbit, named Angel.
Even after ages have passed, and civilization has fallen into ruin, he still remembers her fondly. Generation 4 isn't a sequel to Generation 1. It's a prequel.
I've seen the argument that it's a prequel.
I've also seen the argument that Tirek isn't the same character, or that stuff was lost in lore. The Magic World is perhaps the neatest story I've read that attempted to tie stuff together into a believable whole. And it's major point was that there was simply a ton of time and events between even Pre-Equestria tribal fighting and the events of G1.
The protagonist tries to find proof of humanoid figures, and is... inconclusive. To the point where it's debatable if any mentions of humans actually occurred before she asked about them. She finds what may be a hint to Megan from Kentucky, but that's just it. A hint. She has seen the resting place of the Smooze though, so she knows something related happened. But the march of time makes it unclear.
In the opposite direction, I've seen at least two separate stories that take the position that you do, of the reverse in order. My only issue with it, of course, is the terrible, terrible fate for Equestria it implies. Unless it's someplace outside of Equestria (always possible...)
I feel your last few points on the cottage and Angel may point more to an alternative universe, though.

Well, Hydia did say that the land always used to be dank and dreary before those ponies came. But she also said nothing can stop the Smooze.
And yes, I agree. It would be terrible to see their thriving civilization sink into decadent primitivism. It'd be like Idiocracy, except with ponies. Everypony's happy, everypony's satisfied, and everypony's helpless. The Smooze had the power to snap them out of it, but then it was defeated...
No, I think that seriously establishes the continuity between G4 and G1. Even after ages have passed, and civilization has fallen into ruin, he still remembers her fondly. I think that was their whole point in having Discord start living with Fluttershy.
Oh and yeah, The Magic World is pretty good for an overpowered alicorn OC self insert fic.

Funny, until you said Discord, I didn't realize your blog was trying to make that connection.
Does it count as such if:
A) She doesn't become an Alicorn until much later, and
B) She isn't overpowered compared to other Alicorns, and
C) I didn't see anything Self-Inserty about it compared to the author's commentary compared to the first person narrative.

Seriously? I thought it was ridiculously obvious!
4028058
The fact is, Discord is hardly as helpful as The Moochick is. Nor is The Moochick as chaotic. For the comparison to hold merit, it would have to have Discord giving the Mane Six the Elements of Harmony in the first place, because that's what The Moochick does with the Locket.
Hm. Not as long or detailed as I was expecting/hoping, but quite interesting nonetheless! Thanks for sharing. :)

Well, people can presumably change a lot in however many thousands of years of new experiences this might have been, especially if at least one of those experiences is an apocalypse.
4028104
Yes, after the mane 6 taught Discord about how valuable friendship was, he kept a little piece of the Rainbow to remember. When the Rainbow became corrupted with darkness and wrecked the world, he had with him the memory of what it once was, the only way to return it to its former glory. So of course he's going to give it back to the ponies.

Gimme a break I got stories to write.
Plus I justhadto rewatch the movie. There's absolutely zero chance the show writers of FiM would do that on purpose. If any of them even realize the coincidence, they'd think of it as Discord being the opposite of the Moochick. I'm not saying the idea you have up there couldn't work in a story, but there's no way the show writers would be deliberately setting up G4 to become G1.
The way backstory is done for FiM, anything and everything not in the direct spotlight of an episode is deliberately left without explanation. They make stuff up as needed for each episode, and most long term stuff put in to build up to the season finale. So unless FiM is leading up to a show finale where Equestria undergoes and Apocalypse and Discord does a 189 degree character turn, the show writers did not deliberately have Discord start living with Fluttershy to hint at him eventually becoming the Moochick.

Heh, sure, sure, no problem. Thanks again for what you did write here.
G1 after G4? Heh.. heh..heh....
Have you ever read my stories? Start with the Magnificent six....
4027954 there's also the ridiculously massive backstory of the shadow wars verse, by jordan179.
He combined several different worlds uncluding the **gummi bears** to explain g4. Uplifted ponies. G3 ponies made immortal. The solar system truly went geocentric.

Well, obviously!
What?.. AFAIK he was called Habbit.
4121850
Really? I remember him being called Angel. Thought G4's Angel was a direct reference to that.
Something to point out I'd that G1 humans can use magic. Even Megan and Danny are confirmed to have magic they just never get to learn how to use it.
