I recommend female elf, class whatever. Romance Solas, you will be his Lavellan. Also a twist in the end.

Don't recommend that romance! We don't want the person's heart broken! I'm still not over Solas. Or Morrigan or Isabela, to be honest...
But yeah, elf and Qunari tend to be the most intriguing, I find. Choose the gender based on who you want to Romance. Cullen, Solas and Sera will only be with females (Solas with elf only, Cullen with elf and human, and Sera regardless of race). Cassandra and Dorian will only romance males, although I can't remember any race specifications.
The other romance options are all bisexual.
