Spiritual successor to "Everypony Lives" · 6:01am May 8th, 2016

Almost the instant I published Everypony Lives, I got the uncomfortably astute feedback that the story felt "like a small piece of something much larger."

And well… that observation is completely correct.

A year and half ago I finished a rather lengthy story that delves much, much deeper (and darker) into the ideas of Everypony Lives. I’ve been on the fence for a long time on whether to actually publish it or not. But I think I’m finally ready to release Reincarnation or Immortality.

But if you want to read it, you'll have to read two short prequels first.

The first story, The Library of Discord, is an exploration of the nature of Immortality, and the sheer duration of such an undertaking.

The second story, A Place for Pinkie, is an exploration of the nature of Reincarnation, and what it means to change. (You'll probably notice that the inciting incident for A Place for Pinkie is eerily similar to Everypony Lives.)

And the story getting published, Reincarnation or Immortality, is a 50k word deep dive into what happens when these two wildly different philosophies come into contact. With the eternal fate of Equestria riding on the outcome of their argument.

If you liked the philosophical ideas in Everypony Lives, but found the story itself to be vague, lacking, or unsatisfying, I strongly invite you to read this trilogy.

Reincarnation or Immortality will release one chapter a day starting Tuesday, May 10th with the last update on Thursday, May 19th.

Thanks! :trollestia:

Ok, I just added The Library of Discord to my reading list, and I will surely read your sequel.

I also think that, as philosophy goes, your sequel will necessarily be a strawman of the Immortality side. From the perspective of IRL people in favor of immortality, reincarnation is already a form of immortality. Yes, some people hold that it is, even if you don't retain any memories across lives.

As a result, the debate is going to come across as "chocolate or vanilla" when the real-world argument is more like, "cake or death". If nobody in the argument is actually representing total oblivion, then the real debate is left out.

I'm not sure what to say that won't spoil a bunch of stuff. But rest assured, this is considered.
