    an update

Hi all. I hope everyone is doing well. I've been taking an extended break from FimFiction lately. Had some undesirable interactions with some users. That coupled with some of my creative frustrations just makes logging on... kind of unpleasant? If I do log on, it's usually to try and catch up with the fics I'm reading and then I quickly log off. I'm just feeling drained with the MLP fanfic

It was my birthday yesterday! I'd meant to post the day of, but honestly, I was so tired and busy I just didn't have much time or energy to sit at my computer. Wanna hear a funny story or two, plus see the new playlist I made for Sassaflash? Get it after the jump!

    ponies fix everything

New chapter for What They Hope to Find is out! I talk about what's next after the jump, but before that, a quick anecdote:

Last night, my family was having trouble finding something to watch together. My nine-year-old son didn't have any ideas, but he pretty much shot down every suggestion we had. Eventually, out of frustration and half-serious, I say, "Let's just watch ponies."

    Jinglemas! And Rarijack!

I'm participating in this year's Jinglemas! It's a cute fic exchange that happens every year. I requested a rare pair ship, three guesses which. :twilightsheepish: Today is the last day to join, so if you want in on it, be sure to read over the rules and PM Shakespearicles!

Music for Writing: Post Seis - Sci-Fi/Dystopian/Cyberpunk · 7:02pm Apr 29th, 2016

My brother bought Shadowrun for the SNES, and I now found myself semi-obsessed with its 16-bit soundtrack. I downloaded a ROM of it and started a game through an emulator on my smart phone. I'm not shelling $60 bucks for an old console... At least, not right now.

Erm, anyway. What I'm trying to get as is that I feel like (retro) cyberpunk-type music, so that's what this post is gonna comprise of. Maybe next time I'll do a fantasy-themed music post. Or something piratey. I like pirates.

All the songs are instrumental. In addition to Shadowrun, I'm including some Syndicate and System Shock 2. Get the bleak bleeps n' bloops below!

You might also like the Star Control 2/The Ur-Quan Masters music.

The Ur-Quan Kzer-Za theme is very good in particular in my opinion, especially the remastered version. It's haunting yet really plays up just how terrifying and powerful they are.

Plus, the game itself is great fun! It has one of the best backstories ever in a game (which you don't need to uncover to win).

Geez, I still have to give Deus Ex another shot. They released a "remastered" version, didn't they? With updated graphics? I missed that game growing up, so trying to play it as an adult, I found the gameplay frustrating and hard to forgive. I guess I just need to be in the right mood...

Oh! Thank you! I love old games. I collect them when I can, and I love to watch Let's Plays of them on youtube. I'll have to check this out when I next have a chance.

Deus Ex, from what I remember, is a game that rewards patience. It's almost always better to sneak into a place and quietly take down any opposition than to go in guns blazing.

Funnily enough, I have a never actually played beyond the first mission. The reason being because, no matter what machine or what copy of the game I have ever played, it always crashed after the first mission. I have no idea why. I once played it at a friend's house, and he noticed the strange behaviour, saying that it never did that for him. I guess it's my mutant superpower -- very specific, very situational.

Star Control 2 is one of the best old games! It's also the first game I can recall that has a sex scene.

Starflight is also a great old game, but it doesn't have much in the way of music. It does have one of the best reveals, though.

For a suggestion for the upcoming fantasy soundtrack post...
Tales of Phantasia's soundtrack!
It was the first non-chiptune video game OST, featuring real instruments. And the game itself was the biggest cart to date, sitting at 32MB.

Love it!

3913182 Tales is an absolutely great series. And handily enough, there's a lot of convergent evolution between Tales and Final Fantasy, as Squeenix and the Namco Tales Team are made from the remnants of Tri-Ace, the people who made ToP.
It also features the Linear Motion Battle system, which makes combat work more like a hybrid fighting game / RPG.

The only Tales game I every played was Tales of Graces F, which my husband bought me as a gift. I was enjoying it up until he sort of ruined it for me by spoiling the story and gameplay. I think I was 1/3 of the way through when I stopped. :facehoof:

I was pretty intrigued by the combat in that video! I see what you're saying about the fighting/RPG hybridization. It looks really cool! The way the screen flits back and forth might take some getting used to, but it certainly seems exciting.

I was more of an early Squaresoft RPG fan. Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy... I'm horrendously mainstream that way. :twilightoops:

3913226 The Sister Gun / Mako Cannon from Final Fantasy VII is directly lifted from Tales of Phantasia. :rainbowdetermined2:
It's a super great series. Tales of Phantasia can be found as a Super Famicom / SNES emulator title, search for the DeJap fan translation (it never saw an American release), and the rest have been released (or re-released) on every major platform. The most recent is Tales of Symphonia being ported to PC, Xbone, and PS4. and Tales of Zestiria (both of which expanded the combat system and ambition of storytelling).
