Today is Autism Awareness Day · 4:58pm Apr 14th, 2016

So find the closest person with autism you know and give them a hug to let them know that you care!

Actually, don't do that. They might have sensory issues that would make that uncomfortable.

But seriously, autism is an actual thing that affects a bunch of people. The effects might range from social issues to near-immobility in extreme cases.

Now you're aware.

Edit: apparently it was April 2nd. But autism is still a real thing everyone should be aware of.

I have a friend with autism. His name is Alex. He is such a nice person to everyone and they all treat him like crap. Some even make fun of his habits. I'm gonna let him know that I care deeply about him and am glad he is a great friend.

3870100 yeah, it's tough when people aren't willing to empathize with someone else's issues or aren't even aware of them.

You sound like a good friend.

3870127 I try to be. I usually befriend the people nobody else will, cuz I know how it feels to be lonely.

Hey. So this day's to let people know about me?

3870130 Sounds admirable.

I knew plenty of people who could have used a friend like you when I was in school.

*hugs self*

Of course, I really lucked out. There's definitely worse flavors than high-functioning Asperger's.

Autism Awareness is damaging, and the group Autism Speaks is shit.
We need autism acceptance, and there's a couple groups like SAGA that are staffed by autistic persons.

3870136 ...I guess? Sure.

3870142 Yeah. A lot of people seem to forget that aspect of it, for some reason.

When I was a kid, "autism" usually referred to only low-functioning cases. It's nice to see it get more diagnostic recognition among high-functioning cases.

3870142

Same. It does make some things harder, like not being a perfectionist that can't complete/post a story for one, but at least it's not a constant battle.

3870146 I could certainly see your case in those who present as high functioning, I'm not going to deny that.

Adagio has Autism? 0.o

I know two who has autism; My younger big brother and my friend. Both likes hugs and I love them both... In fact, I actually like my brother more than the others... *shrugs and hugs my brother*

3870165 No. Like.
So, the Autism Speaks commercials? They only advocate awareness for low-functioning autistics, and make it out to be the end of the world and everyone should cry for you.
We need Acceptance, nor awareness. Someone to say that they exist, and that they're people too, and even low-functioning autistic persons are good at things.

As a fellow autistic person, it's nice to see such kindness. I'm glad this is a thing and there are people like you who care and not take the piss out of us for something that we struggle with.

Thank you very much.

-Offers a handshake and a smile-

3870193 *Takes the handshake and smiles back* Not a problem, old sport.

3870178 I'm personally not denying that they are people.

People with autism have hopes, fears and dreams just as much as neurotypicals, and I recognize that. Maybe even more so.

But I'm pretty sure you don't need me telling you that.

3870207 I'm only saying it as a kind gesture. I say that to almost everyone I befriend

3870159 Honestly, my biggest problem is just being constantly distracted by how awesome the world is. A heightened awareness of what people take for granted is not good for deadlines.

3870167 Not that hard to believe.

This line alone perfectly sums up how someone with Asperger's acts around stupid people.

3870210 I know, I apologise, I was having a little joke. Didn't mean to offend you.

3870242 Oh. Lol. You didn't offend me. I just thought I offended you is all

3870142 Yep. *Hugs self as well*

But that's why we're here. *Hugs Moriarty*

Autism awareness day. I didn't know fimficition had a day devoted to it.

3870353 pls flare I'm trying to keep it srs here:unsuresweetie:

3870238 ah...that lovely moment when you realize the other people in the conversation lost your train of thought three minutes ago.

I've done that (in my head) I don't mind them knowing they're idiots but I was raised to think about their feelings first. So I just let them know more subtly.

Though some of them make me want to go Siren on them and take their minds and shit. Especially when they take what I say (building a supercomputer, Hitler was a good leader, etc...) and blow it out of proportion (trying to hack the government, Nazi supporter) when I don't mean NY thing like that. I'm sure Adagio just means they're normal people. And would agree with my points.

3870178 Another problem with Autism Speaks is the way they compare Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) to highly contagious and deadly diseases. This makes it sound, to the ignorant, like ASD is a contagious and deadly disease itself. They also continue to insist that vaccines may have some connection to ASD despite every single study into such a possibility has found zero correlation. (They also act like ASD is a bad thing when it's obviously the next stage in human evolution. Worry not humans of the previous version, I'm more for acceptance than for conquest/genocide regarding your kind.)

As a sufferer of Autism, thanks for bringing attention to the day and spreading awareness, it's appreciated :pinkiehappy:

I think the effects of autism are blown out a little out of proportion. People react to it like no one can make it on their own if they have it. Makes it a bit more socialize, yes, but some make it work pretty well, i.e. The Mysterious Mr. Enter. Nonetheless it's still something to take into consideration, but in the mean time I'll be treating them like all my friends: busting their balls and cracking jokes about TV and politics.

When the whole world is working to bend and manipulate your mind to think their way, autism is probably a defense mechanism.

Wouldn't this require us to not interact with anyone involved with FiMfiction so that we don't trigger them?

Actually, don't do that. They might have sensory issues that would make that uncomfortable.

THANK YOU.

But really, this warms my heart to see. A lot of the time, people don't understand mental health issues (especially autism) at all. It's nice to see people still care, understand, and want to raise awareness. I really appreciate that.
