"On Your Marks" Review by the HeroofBergen (Spoilers) · 6:04pm Apr 9th, 2016
Ok, I'm going to get through this right now. I hate Crusaders of the Lost Mark. I consider it the worst episode of the series. I won't go into details as to why, but if really want an answer I might make a review of Crusaders. Regardless, let me get into the review.
As I stated previously I didn't like Crusaders of the Lost Mark. So I went into this episode with already a bad taste in my mouth because of it. So my views on this episode might be a little biased. So take my words with a small grain of salt.
Anyway, onward with the review. I already didn't like how the show made the CMC's special talents being helping others with cutie mark problems. So what, does that mean that they become child physiologist. Helping young foals find their cutie marks. A concept that actually sounds not that bad, but sadly no. Well, sort of doesn't happen.
Let's get through the negative first. Applebloom was annoying while she was shown to be prone to panicking more than the other Crusaders. Bloom and Gloom a prime example. She did it in a way that was both funny and believable. Applebloom freaking out that they don't have a cutie mark problem and going to disappear, either figuratively or literally, seemed forced and I didn't believe it. Not to mention the song by her after the others leave to do their own thing. Applebloom moment when she does what every member of the Mane Six has done (going bat shit crazy), was interesting. Not as funny as freaking out about being tardy Twilight, but definitely better than assertive Fluttershy. The scene with Sweetie Belle 'singing' with the other Crusaders didn't make sense because the others can sing. Sure Sweetie is the best singer. But it's not a difference between Idina Menzel and Justin Bieber. There about the same. Oh, and Zecora was in the episode, and that's about it. She doesn't even get to speak in ironic rhymingness. Tree Hugger also returned, not a character I expected to make a second appearance, but she only in the episode for like five seconds so... I guess a cameo works. Same with Diamond Tiara, again that's about it. She gets 'redeemed' in her last appearance and now she is just background fodder, great job staff you are really giving her some much needed development.
I was bored the first ten or so minutes. But after Applebloom goes and tries to dance and meets the pony that she help find his cutie mark (I can't remember his name) the episode picks up. The final scene with the pony earning his cutie mark was very well done. The animation was great, the music was good, and I liked the introduction of the new pony. Him likely to become a love interest to Applebloom in either the show or the fandom. Most likely the fandom.
This episode had some pretty interesting references. Most notable being "Singing in the Rain" and "Dirty Dancing". The references, like most of the series, not distracting from the plot of the episode and just for added humor if you can find them. Speaking of the humor it was good. The coming in the scenes with Bulk, his slapstick his always entertaining.
Overall, I would call this episode the worst of Season 6 so far. But being that there have only been four episodes, three if you count the premiere as one, this episode wasn't that bad. The first ten minute I would give a 3.5 out of 10 stars. The last ten minutes I would give a 7.5 out of 10. Combined we have a final score of 5.5 stars of 10. This might start out bad, but it becomes another good Slice of Life episode for the series. Something the series has been doing while since the very beginning.
I am surely looking forward to the next episode when Spike returns to the Dragonlands, and hopefully, we will get a depiction of the dragons other than a bunch of selfish jerks. As always, I am the HeroofBergen signing off until next time.
