So! The first season of Yo-Kai Watch is on Netflix. Good news for all, right?
Well...yes and no. It's kind of a mixed bag.
Somehow or other, Netflix got hold of the Southeast Asian English dub of the show instead of the North American dub that's been running in the US and Canada.
The downside to that: A lot of the voice acting is...bad. Some of it's just average, some of it's bad. Whisper sounds WRONG.
The upside:
- No localization whatsoever. All names are the Japanese names.
- Completely uncensored. The stuff that's usually censored for American TV (like the girl idol group's bikini shots) is left intact.
- Full Japanese TV opening. The Japanese version of Gera Gera Po, the entire thing instead of the shortened English version.
So...it's a mixed bag, and it's likely that sooner or later Netflix will iron out this little screw-up and replace it with the North American dub. Might wanna check it out while you can.
I personally like Localization, if done right. If, say, a British character had a Japanese name in the OG, obviously they would change it. I mean, if said British character was born and raised in Japan, it would make sense, I remember SuperKamek had a funny image about Localization of games in one of his blog. South Korea had some sort of robot fighting aliens, and Japan had a maid fighting tentacles....

Wait, what? I'm hesitant to ask the plot of that particular episode.
3845234 Pretty much every time Jibanyan's favorite girl idol group is mentioned and appears on-screen, they're in bikinis in the original version, and the North American dub covers them up with more "pure" idol outfits.
I hate to say it, but I think they already fixed the audio issue not sure. Title sequence sure is English.
