Miss Koi Reviews The Season 6 Premier · 8:32pm Mar 26th, 2016

Alright, before I begin this review, OHMYGOSH THE CHRISTIAN REFERENCE IN THIS EPISODE IS NOT SUBTLE AT ALL!XD

I don't know if it's because I'm Catholic, but...first of all Crystalling sounds an awful like Christening. I mean, I just laughed when I first heard this term used in the episodeXD Not to mention that the process of Crystalling is definitely a lot like the process of Christening itself. First, you have the parents present the baby to the Crystal Heart (much like Christian and or Catholic parents presenting their baby to the priest & the altar of the church). Then, you have another adult pony presented in the ceremony who is called the Crystaller (I believe, don't quote me on that), who helps crystalize the baby with the Crystal Heart (Much like a godparent figure holds the baby when the priest baptizes and cleanses the baby during the Christening ceremony). This Crystalling ceremony is presented in front of either close family & friends OR in Flurry Heart's case, the entire Crystal Empire. (Which this can be represented as the Christening ceremony presented in front of either the entire church community or just close family & friends). And this Crystalling ceremony increases the power of the Crystal Heart, and in a sense, renews it. (Much like how Christening a new baby into the church helps grows the community and helps the power of the church as well. Cleansing a spirit of a baby is renewing the spirit of the church community as well, and represents life everlasting of Christ, God & Heaven).

AND the fact that the episode is titled Crystalling, along with the fact that the process of Crystalling helped saved the Crystal Empire (with effort of Sunburst and everypony of course) from falling into darkness of winter. And this episode premiered the day right before Easter. Hmmmmm. Is this all a coincidence?

My little conspiracy theory is...that this is the closest that MLP has ever gotten to in terms of a Easter episode;) Now, I'm not saying Christening is a Easter thing. But main and core concepts of Christening embody the values and ideals of Easter. Easter is about everlasting life, the renewal of hope and life, and renewal of one's spirit. That's why our modern culture associates Easter with spring, eggs, and children because spring and eggs and children represents how life is renewed and reborn after winter and life is continuing forward with the next generation. And Christening ceremonies portray the same message about renewal of spirit, cleansing the soul, and hope for the next upcoming life in order to strength the community as a whole. And since Crystalling is like Christening in a sense, and that this episode emphasizes how important Crystalling is...
In other words, HAPPY EARLY EASTER EVERYPONY! AND HAPPY CHOCOLATE BUNNY DISMEMBERED DAY!:D

Just one more thing to add to my religious rant, the whole Christening message of this episode, Starlight's and Sunburst's friendship is renewed and off to a new start. Okay, now I'm done:)

Speaking of Starlight & Sunburst, I still ship Starlight x Double Diamond baby!XD

Don't get me wrong though, I think Starlight & Starburst's friendship is sweet and they play fairly off each other. And based on their interaction so far, I can only see them as just friends. I probably need to see more of Starlight & Starburst to see what I really think of their friendship/relationship.

Speaking of what I think of Starlight & Sunburst individually, let's start with Starlight since she was one of the main focus of the episode;) I like how the conflict dealt with her internal struggle about meeting with Sunburst again and being a student of Twilight's. The episode really made you feel each step of her struggle, especially in the first part of the episode. I really enjoyed her interaction with Spike and how they formed their own little friendship:3 I liked how Spike comforted her and assured throughout the episode, that is when he wasn't using that stinkin list Twilight gave them-_- Then Spike wasn't being himself. Spike is at his best when he is who he is, not following some set out rules. Especially when it comes to friendship. But luckily, this didn't last too long and Spike acknowledged this/learned from this little miss up. Anyway, I deeply enjoyed how Starlight's friendship with Spike brought out more of her sarcastic personality, thus giving some of the main comedic moments of the episode:) I hope throughout Season 6, Starlight gets to bond and learn from each of the Main Six.

I also deeply enjoyed the friendship/mentor-mentee relationship between Starlight & Twilight. Twilight is such an adorable teacher, and I just love how excited she is about it:3 However, I like how she doesn't let her excited blind her from the needs and worries of her student Starlight. She still comforts her and assures her and believes her. I like this hands on, or rather, hooves on approach that Twilight has because it matches her personality and her type A mentality.Even though, she can get too involved with the learning process by having a list, but Twilight tells Starlight that she knows what she's going through because she had to do the same thing in Amending Fences:) Although, I didn't like how at the end of the episode Spike tells Twilight that it's good to be more hooves off like Celestia. Even though I agree that some lessons require more hands off approach from teachers, but Celestia's approach to this technique has never really been successful in the past because Celestia can be too hooves off, thus making her not exactly a great teacher in my book. Celestia is not as involved as she should be. Especially in the beginning seasons. Sorry Celestia fans:(

Question: Does anyone know why Starlight changed up her hairdo? They never explained this in the episode, is it to subtlety show how Starlight turned over a new leaf?
In terms of if I like Starlight or not, I need to see more episodes with Starlight to see if I like or not.

As for Sunburst, my theory about him being a powerful unicorn and having a big ego was a bust; but regardless, I still liked Sunburst in the episode. I still to see more episodes with Starburst to see if I fully like him and appreciate him; but, I liked how he was handled in the episode:) I liked how he had something to hide too like Starlight. I had a feeling that his secret had to deal with him not being a powerful wizard. But this still surprised me because at a young age, he was shown to be skilled in magic. In a sense, he still is but only when it comes to the knowledge of magic. Which came in handy for the conclusion of the episode, and earned him the title of being Flurry Heart's Crystaller/Godfather/Magic Teacher. He and Flurry Heart are sooo adorable together, and I love his new role in her life:3!

Speaking of Flurry Heart, I really like her:3 She's such an adorable ball of destruction:3 <3! She has stolen my heart<3 I don't care what everypony says, I'm a Flurry Heart fan!XD I like how she's an energetic, happy, but destructive little baby. Like most babies!XD Lol! I like her relationship with her Auntie Pinkie, they're two kindred spirits:3 Though, I needed more Auntie Twilight & Flurry Heart moments:( I also deeply enjoyed and cracked up how Flurry Heart's powers and activity made Shining a tired and newly stressed out father; which created some of the funniest moments in the episode!XD Hooray some expansion on Shining's personality! Though, I wished that we saw more of stressed out new mommy Cadence, that should have helped with expansion on her personality as well.
Secret Confession time you guys: I can imagine Flurry Heart as she gets older developing an adorable crush on Spike:3 That's right folks, I ship Flurry Heart x Spike!XD Please Hasbro, make this happen!
While I can understand how Flurry Heart matches the baby's wild, crazy, but meaningful heart; I don't like how the reason why she was named Flurry Heart to remember how the Crystal Empire was almost lost to the dark winter during her Crystalling:/ Her Crystalling is a happy occassion, just not the danger surrounding it.
One of the things that ticked me off about this episode was the lack of information on Celestia's & Luna's part:/ I mean, they're naturally born alicorns yet they couldn't explain why Flurry Heart in existence?! REALLY GUYS?! REALLY?! NOT EVEN A GUESS WHY?! C'mon, I thought we would get some new info on alicorns, just a little. Not this! I'm sorry, I shouldn't be this ticked off, but...I can't help it!X0 We're so close, and yet nothing! I mean, Celestia and Luna didn't even know how to repair the Crystal Heart. REALLY GUYS?! REALLY?!

Also, I was hoping for a secret villain for this episode like in my Season 6 theory/wish list. I can understand why the winter north is an obstacle itself, but it wouldn't hurt to have some Windagios right?

Before I rate this episode, OH MY GOSH Twilight's parents spoke!:o Tehee, have fun you two being the grandparents to Flurry Heart;) Now, all we need is some character personality on those two and we will be good to go:)

This episode was definitely one of the funnier premier episodes of any season, along with some cute moments and great development for some characters & their relationships. I give this premier 7 hearts out of 10<3

I can't wait for the next episode because it's all about Pinkie & Maud & Rarity!XD How can you possibly go wrong with a combination like that?!:D

Yay DoubleGlimmer! Also yay StarBurst!

I thought it was pretty ok overall- nothing special, but not awful either.

Oh, and on another note:

DoubleGlimmer shippers unite!:D
Yes, I did see this picture on your DA and it's a nice reference to Zootopia;)
Also, did you get my message yesterday?

I was reasonably certain that the name was an intentional pun.

Honestly, Starlight and Spike working together was the best part of this. The rest was all fine well and good, but the interaction between those two really made me smile, especially because Spike wasn't being an irresponsible jerk, and Starlight was behaving naturally, without flip-flopping about being evil or getting overly emotional (mostly).

I gotta say, though, I don't know if I like Starlight being a major part of the Mane 6 dynamic. I'd really like her to be an on-again-off-again character, like Discord, but I worry that her being Twi's student will force Twilight into just that role: Starlight's teacher.

I guess we'll find out, but I'm certainly looking forward to next week's episode... where I hear a certain favorite supporting character of mine will show up. :pinkiehappy:

Hooray, I'm not the only one that saw it as a intentional pun!:D

Agreed, Starlight acted very naturally in this episode, without getting too overly emotional about her situation (but only gets emotional about her situation when it was appropriate).

I feel ya, I'm not sure on how to feel about Starlight being part of the Mane 6. That's why I want to see a little more of Starlight in this season in order to get to know her personality, and see how she would fit into the main cast/overall story of MLP. Most likely, Starlight will get her focus in this season, then become more of a on-and-off character like Discord.

Ah, I see that we have another Maud fan in our mist:raritywink::pinkiehappy::derpytongue2::heart:
