Season Premier Thoughts, The C(rstal)hristening of Starlight Glimmer · 5:19pm Mar 26th, 2016

Howdy howdy once again! Derply here, returning to chat a bit about ponies after his/her/it's last emotional blog post... yay!

While life is still... a thing for me right now, I'm not here to talk about that today.

Today I'm here to talk about ponies!

SPOILER TALK BEGINS NOW YO, EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE STILL MARKED

-Flurry Heart is the FIRST naturally born alicorn?! Not even Celestia or Luna were?! Daaaammmmmnnn, that fact better not just fade off into obscurity in either the show OR fandom. I really want to learn more.
-I can totally see Shining's relation to Twilight now. Lesson Zero man style, heh.
-Cadence should NOT be this up and about. Like, seriously gurl.
-Daaaaaawwww. The girls made Flurry Heart a crib. Applejack made the base, Rainbow the mobile, Rarity the blanket... My headcanon includes Pinkie giving it a mattress, which he stashes all over the Crystal Empire in case of Sleeping emergencies, and Fluttershy the pillow for reasons that have nothing to do with a certain tumblr comic blog yessir.
-Shining Armor's shield spell is super cool looking now. Like dang. Nice.
-Starlight claiming she's only friends with Spike and Twilight is interesting. We've seen her interacting with others, and maybe even they see her as a friend, but Starlight doesn't see it that way yet. She doesn't think she can just say "We're friends!" and be done with it... I'll write more about that in a second.
-SPIKE WAS FREAKING AMAZINGLY MATURE AND IN CHARACTER AND SUPPORTIVE AND OMG PLEASE KEEP THIS UP I'LL LOVE YOU FOREVER BYE
-... EXCEPT FOR THE PART WHERE HE ENCOURAGED TWILIGHT TO TAKE UP CELESTIA'S TEACHING METHODS OH SWEET INNOCENT CHILD NO YOU'RE GOING TO RUIN STARLIGHT SO BADLY
-Celestia calls all her students as HER students, not just Twilight and Sunset. Interesting...
-Twilight's parents can actually freaking talk?! Holy horsecrap Batmare!
-I just realized that we never saw the guard who Shining chose. With only one other guard on staff in the Crystal Empire with a name, by process of elimination that would make it... Oh sweet Celestia no.

And finally...

-Ending Changeling? Ending Changling. An... Endling, if you would.

Now with all those little tidbits out of the way, let's talk about how much I love Starlight Glimmer now! Since the finale of season 5, I've developed a headcanon to justify the quick fire heel turn she experienced during it. Said headcanon, putting it bluntly, is this; she remembered the breakup differently. There, nuff said. She remembered it being harsher and more soul crushing, thus when she re-watched it, after just having seen first hoof THE MOTHERBUCKING APOCALYPSE SHE ACCIDENTALLY CREATES, and realizes how petty she's been her last ditch effort to cling to her plan fell apart before Twilight's offer at friendship.

These episodes strengthened my headcanon quite a bit, and also gave me quite a bit more to love. She's STILL the same villain level of genre savvy she was in season 5, as seen when she tricked Spike to waste time to avoid seeing Sunburst, and she actually befriends Spike! Not just "You're here with Twilight so I guess we can hang"; she legitimately called Spike her friend! Hot damn yes!

And now I'm looking forward to a season where Starlight slowly becoming true friends with the rest of the cast.

Look's like we're in for a good run ^_^

See you next time!

-Derply

P.S. It is SHOCKING how completely and utterly neutral I am on Flurry Heart lol. At least I like her parent's a lot more now; I can see them being awesome in raising her.

hmmm, not seeing the flamethrower.

Here's another thing for Coggy to have an Arianism over.

At least this give me practice for when Game of thrones starts up again, for the net is dark and full of spoilers.

Ehh, I'm rather meh on how the episode turned out really, rather underwhelming. It also bring up the question of how much time has actually passed since it's only been 7 episodes since the pregnancy was announced and Cadance wasn't even showing then. Also the episode was way too predictable at times and I was guessing some of the things that would happen like ten minutes before they happened.

Frankly if this is the type of mood we should expect for the season I'm not too terribly impressed and I actually think the Sombra episode was better done. Oh and Rainbow Dash not knowing how to deal with the weather there just because it is wild and does things on it's own? Yeah, moron Celestia moment since you know... The EVERFREE FOREST is the same way. :facehoof:

She's STILL the same villain level of genre savvy she was in season 5

Haha I was just thinking that. She's still manipulative ole Glimmer.

Of course, the twist that Sunburst can't actually cast powerful spells, and was a failure as a wizard was hinted right at the beginning, and pretty telegraphed.

Overall, though, they did pretty good with Sunburst, though.

I remember the shit that Spike fans had when the teaser happened and Spike didn't show up at all, but instead it was that he was in the other half of the story, that wasn't teased basically at all!

"OH COME ON! I did NOT help them get freaky with it... did I?"

lol

3828512
Yeah, I ended up liking Sunburst by the end of everything. If the comics (or fandom) want to give us some stories set in the Crystal Empire now, they've got a pretty good non-royal and non-mane-six related pair of (four) eyes they can use to get the job done.

I think this set of episodes is going to end up being in my top-tier Spike episode list now too. It's so damn rare when he's given the chance to be who he is. This and Equestria Girls 1 seem to be the only ones off the top of my head that do it right...

Lastly, I really REALLY hope they keep this aspect of Starlight going forward. The main cast needs more smart, manipulative characters in their fold to balance off Twilight's straightforward way of thinking. It also REALLY helps separate her from the original 7th ranger, Sunset Shimmer. Starlight can be the one who thinks outside the box, and Sunset can continue to be the one whose the recipient of all the Sass Twilight's character lost over the years! :rainbowlaugh:

Obviously they're saving them for the finale, were EXTREME pest control will be needed to save the day, heh.

3828420
To each their own I guess. I can see why people would be meh about it, it was pretty laid back for an opening. Magical Alicorn Foal oopsies aren't as EPIC in scale as chaos gods, shadow kings, or Equality spouting dictators, and nowhere near as unpredictable. I think it was around the second part of Starlight's flashback that I realized that Sunburst was probably going to A) not be very magical and B) be the one to save the day regardless lol. I didn't really see that as a bad thing though. Like I said, this episode was really more about getting us used to Starlight's addition to the cast. In that respect I feel that it gave us a good show. I can see how she's different from Twilight and, more importantly, Sunset Shimmer now at least... She doesn't have the sass Sunny stole from Twilight XD

Oh, and just defending Rainbow's inactivity for a sec cuz I wanna; she DID get her flanked kicked by an Everfree Forest cloud before during Twilight's Kingdom, and she later was unable to remain flying under all that heavy snow in this episode, so it doesn't bug me too much... We still got to keep my eye on you, gurl! Don't go slacking off none :rainbowwild:
