On ponies and their suggested vegetarianism. · 8:32pm Mar 18th, 2016
When I got into this fandom, I more or less accepted that ponies were completely vegetarian as suggested in Pinkie's song in Over a Barrel.
But slowly as I read more and more fanfiction I saw bits that suggested the ponies (usually pegasi) eating fish. I remember just chalking this up to some variety in pony diet or the author not wanting to have their HIE character wanting to have to conform to a vegetarian society.
However, I began to actually look into it and it does happen in real life. Horses in the wild and on farms will kill and eat birds. Below is a video of a horse actually doing this. (mind you, it's a live chicken. Warning.)
Frankly, I was surprised to see this and began to wonder what this would mean for my own image of Equestria. I do see the ponies as being mostly vegetarian, as well as enjoying eggs and milk, but seeing how most animals possess the intellect of a child, I can't see ponies in the present day going om nom nom on a chicken. It would be more common in pre-unification days but Twilight would probably not want to have a big thanksgiving turkey.
I think the fandom created a good idea with the pegasi enjoying seafood, and I could see earth ponies preferring poultry since the pegasi could easily live over or near large water sources. Unicorns however I think would be the least inclined to indulge in carnivorous meals since they be looking down on it as 'barbarous behavior.'
At the same time I don't think that if ponies would eat meat, it would likely just be a special occasion, a tribe-specific holiday for example, or if a pony needed to gain muscle quickly after say a long stint in the hospital or if they want to bulk up like... well, Bulk Bicep/Snowflake.
I know a lot of this is old news for the fandom, but I wanted to throw my thoughts out there after seeing... well, that video. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this though.
I actually read an article that pretty much said that most animals we traditionally think of as herbivores are actually also opportunistic omnivores. As in, they're herbivores right up until they actually have a chance to eat another animal, and then it's all fair game. I can't remember most of the animals that were shown (as in video clips of the act) but the ones that stayed with me were cows, deers and horses. Treacherous ungulates.
3814793 Definitely food for thought when I redo Lost and Blind. Originally I had that written as ponies thinking eggs for breakfast were a strange concept. I gotta find that article you mentioned.
sapient non ponies can sign a waver that, after their deaths, their body can be used for food.
These "herbivores" are actually just a step below hypocarnivores. You can think of them as seeing meat and other animal sources of nutrients as a dietary supplement, just like cats and dogs sometimes consume plants (especially leaves and stems, never saw one digging for roots) as a sort of medicine.
