    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Birthday Bios: Green Circle · 6:38am Mar 17th, 2016

Yes, I made her birthday St. Patrick’s Day on purpose. Because green.

In any case, let’s go down and see what this filly has to offer!

Born in Paddock City to parents Powder Snow and Alta, Green Circle (nicknamed “Greenie”) was the only girl and the baby of the family, three older brothers having preceded her. Said brothers—Double Diamond, Black Diamond, and Blue Square—adored their little sister, as she was a little ball of sunshine that they could chase and tickle to their hearts’ content. However, none of them liked having to change Greenie’s diaper, especially finicky neatnik Blue Square.

From the moment she could walk, Greenie was taken on walks through the canyon with Alta for mother-daughter time. All the while, she’d be bounding along, chasing butterflies and picking flowers. In fact, she has picked enough flowers for a collection, and was often trying to identify them through pictures in a book (a family member would read it aloud for her until she learned to read). Several times she has slipped and scraped herself on a rock during a hike, but she never let that stop her.

At age five, she received a stuffed bunny for her birthday. She creatively named it “Bunny”, and she held on to the toy for many years, taking it everywhere she could and doing everything with it. She put up a bit of a fight when her parents told her she couldn’t bring Bunny to school (unless it was show and tell).

Starting school, she made plenty of friends in her class, due to her understanding of botany that surpassed her classmates. The group of fillies she hung out with were all artists in their own way, and she developed an interest in art as well, and loved the part of the day when they could do arts and crafts. From goofy stuff like tying blades of grass to a bow to messily recreating Salt Lick City’s Salt Spires with popsicle sticks, she looked forward to every moment of creation. What she did not look forward to was the inevitable crushing of whatever she made by the local bully, Weak Link, who singled her out simply for having buck teeth.

While spring was (and still is) her favorite season, she also enjoyed winter. She has taken some basic skiing lessons with her family, with eldest brother Double Diamond being the big helper (since it was his special talent). Her gung ho attitude helped her persevere through her lessons, and while she’ll never be as good as DD, she still had fun during ski trips, tearing through snow as much as she could.

Summer was also fun, with her family campouts to other places in the Unicorn Range or north in the Crystal Mountains always had her discovering new things. Though in one campsite they commonly went to, there was a squirrel the family named Chipparooney, who led an army against the ponies. Greenie was always wanting to fight them, imagining herself climbing up that tree with a flyswatter and swatting Chip until he surrendered.

All was well and good in her world until the then-teenaged Double Diamond went through a bit of a rebellious phase, which ended in an avalanche sweeping into town. Being still a little filly, her contributions to the cleanup were minimal, but at least she and Bunny did as much as they could. Still, she was saddened that her oldest brother had made such a big mistake, and he decided to leave out of guilt. She did enjoy receiving letters from him—until they suddenly stopped coming. A few months after the last letter, she watched her parents panic over the whereabouts of their eldest.

In order to cope with her brother’s disappearance, she joined her father in his little knitting sessions, learning from him how to weave the yarn into scarves, kerchiefs, and hats. Her close observation of the way the yarn was interlaced and the memory of her grass bows made her decide to try doing it with plants.

Her first attempts at weaving flower crowns were messes. She had to figure out how to arrange the flowers, make sure the stems were flexible enough for them to do what she wanted, and weave them in a way that kept the entire thing from falling apart. One attempt somehow exploded on her grandmother, another had the flowers die on her as she was weaving, and another had the flowers keep on breaking as she tried to weave them. A lot of times, she felt like screaming, but she kept on going.

Didn’t help that Black Diamond and Blue Square argued a lot, often over petty things. She never quite connected with them like she did with Double Diamond, and took to calling them “Doofus 1” and “Doofus 2” whenever they clashed. It wasn’t that she didn’t love them, it was just that they drove her nuts.

One day, another letter from Double Diamond finally arrived, which their mother nearly ripped apart in her rush to read it. Greenie was incredibly happy to learn that her oldest brother was not dead, and that he was apparently the mayor of a small town now. She was confused at the part of the letter that stated he had his cutie mark removed, wondering how that was even possible. Either way, she looked forward to Hearth’s Warming that year, since that’s when they’d see him again.

Just as that season was rolling around the corner, she had managed to succeed in weaving something—though it was a wreath instead of a flower crown. But no matter what it had been, she had successfully weaved her interests of botany and art together, and that sealed her cutie mark (wreath with white flowers). Her family was proud (her daddy just about cried on seeing his little girl growing up), and she was excited to show Double Diamond once they met up with him.

Her teenage years flew by, with her being apprenticed to a professional weaver in Salt Lick City, and she weaved baskets, garlands, tinsel, and many other items. She’d still knit some garments for her master, friends, and family, and has fulfilled specific requests for her brothers (specifically items for her little nieces and nephews). She’s also picked up a bit of balloon modeling from Double Diamond’s friend Party Favor.

As an adult, she went on to do some bigger jobs, doing some independent work for clients around the Salt Lick Valley. Once, as she wove a garland for a friend having a wedding, she bumped into a gardener working on the plants in the park. As she was kind of bored, she struck up a conversation with the gardener, Alfalfa, and befriended him over mutual love of botany and tales of their crazy families.

It turned into a surprisingly close friendship.

Heh. It's also my mother's birthday today. An amusing coincidence.

In any case, quite an interesting life here, from the squirrel war to hints at Double Diamond's reasons for going to Starlight's village. And I still have to admire Powder and Alta's dedication to the theme. I can only imagine what would've happened if all three sons had cooperated and the last child came out red or something.
