    Gaunlet of Fire: Thoughts

This episode was absolutely terrific. I literally went into super fan boy mode when I saw this episode. I just couldn't actually believe what I was seeing. This is what My Little Pony should have been, not what it is. But yet due to some miracle, in MODERN MLP, we had an episode which had fantastic world building (although world is still wrecked,) fantastic new characters, an episode which

MLP Retrospective: Why Has The Show Gone Downhill?

If your familiar with my blogs you know that I am not particularly favorable with McCarthy's direction with the show. I've done a blog post in which I covered who was to blame for MLP's drop in quality, in which I ultimately decided it was McCarthy. However, one thing I feel I have not done in enough detail, is explain exactly why the show is worse off now than it was back when it began. This

Okay, so now that that's out of the way, I'm going to discuss briefly the episodes I haven't reviewed and what I thought of them.

Canterlot Boutique

I remember making a blog post about this one but I took it down because I realized it wasn't very good. Basically I hated this episode because of the way it portrayed marketing. Now, I'm not saying a story about big executives telling you what to do and how that's wrong has to be bad, it's actually a great idea and basically what the Mane Attraction was about which I liked much more. No, I didn't like this episodes because Sapphire Shores is made to look bad whereas a matter of fact she was just making sure the business made as much money as possible. She saw what the customers liked, and so understandably requested more of them.

Rarity wanting to go on a creative free spree may not have made as much money, people wanted the Princess Dress, so it's understandable why Sapphire Shores would request that to be made, but yet she is made to look bad in the end for "suppressing creativity." Now I'm not saying big bosses don't do that, they often do, and often ruin things or at least help to ruin things, just look at Hasbro with MLP. But in this circumstance Sapphire Shores was just doing her job, and I think it is unfair how she is portrayed in the episode. Again, I'm not saying this kind of thing couldn't have worked, because it did kinda in the Mane Attraction which was one of that episodes strong points, but here it simply doesn't work because the context in my eyes makes Sapphire Shores completely guiltless and Rarity a stupid idiot who just wants to do what she wants regardless of what will sell.

Rarity Investigates

I really enjoyed this episode. First off, because it was really cool finally getting to see an episode focusing on Rarity and Rainbow Dash, a combination not seen in an episode before, and secondly because it's noir feel was awesome and made Rarity look like an absolute badass. The music was great, the noir style added to the episode was fantastic. Overall this episode was just a lot of fun, and I don't really have any complaints about it. It was really creative and I really enjoyed it.

Made in Manehatten

I don't really have a lot to say about this one. Again, not really much problems, it was a very sweet episode with a nice moral. I did have minor problems with it, for example that scene when Applejack can't cross a road. Like... guys, I know she's a country girl but I'm pretty sure she knows how to cross a fucking road. Still, I don't feel I can quite give it a lower grade simply because of that.

Brotherhooves Social

One of my favorite episodes of the season. This episode was so unbelievably sweet and so true. It focuses on the relationship between Apple Bloom and Big Mac whilst Applejack is with Rarity so can't go to Sisterhooves Social. Therefore, Big Mac see's this as his opportunity to rekindle his relationship with his little sister and go to the Social with her. Of course, he has to dress up as a women. I personally found this really funny, but I can understand why others might find it annoying. I loved how Sweetie Belle could see right through Big Mac's disguise even though it was actually a very good disguise. Really shows her intelligence, and a refreshing departure from Ash Ketchum not noticing Team Rocket even though their literally just wearing different clothes. My favorite part of the episode has to be at the very end though, when Big Mac claims that he feels overshadowed by Applejack, because whilst she's out saving the world, he just helps out on the farm in any way he can. It really shows who Big Mac is as a character, he is a hardworking and honest stallion, who even though he may not be a part of saving Equestria, brings so much joy and happiness into his family's lives. And it's great when Apple Bloom and Big Mac hug....

Hearthsbreakers

Solid episode in my books. Really good study on other peoples different traditions and accepting differences. Big Mac X Marble all the way. It felt like an episode from the Faustian era, and a really great Christmas episode, even though for some reason, it didn't air anywhere near christmas and was BEFORE Scare Master, which was a Halloween episode.

The Scare Master

I have to give this episode an F, because it's THE SAME FUCKING THING AS EVERY FLUTTERSHY EPISODE. How many times is she going to have to learn the lesson to not be shy and to believe in herself. It's the plot of literally every single Fluttershy episode and the writers can't seem to think of anything else. There's lots more to Fluttershy's character, her relationship with animals, her kindness to other ponies, why not focus on that instead of same old, same old, Fluttershy has to believe in herself.

I do give the episode credit for it's uncanny Faustian feel, but I can't give it a high grade, because it's the same thing we've seen before with Fluttershy, just done in a slightly different way.

What About Discord

My main problem with the episode was just how fucking boring and annoying it was. Discord was so unfunny in this episode, it just makes me angry with how bad his one liners are. With some dreadful episodes like Spike at Your Service I can laugh at how dreadful they are, but this episode was just boring. The whole jealousy could have been done better and in a less over the top and subtle way. They go all out with this whole thing that happened but the problem is that the jokes are never funny whatever way you look at it, so Twilight's need for wanting to understand why it's funny doesn't work because IT JUST ISN'T. They could have been more creative with the humor, making it not seem funny to Twilight but funny to us. The comedy was the worst part of the episode, and it dragged it completely down, as well as Discord's credibility completely down.

It was also SO BORING. I have seen stupid episodes, I have seen episodes that don't make any sense, but never have I seen a more boring episode than this one.

One thing I did like was Discord's plan to make Twilight feel jealous, it reminded me briefly of the wonderful sadistic master of disharmony that Lauren Faust created. But I found him so unbearable for the rest of the episode that this little stunt didn't make me feel any better. I feel like I've gone off his character for all time.

The HoofFeilds and McColts

This episode was so painfully average I have no comment on it. And I mean average for modern MLP. The story was pretty flat and predictable, it was extremely annoying. So yeah, I really don't have much to say on this one, but I can't give it an F because that would mean it's especially bad. It's not, it's just modern FIM. Also Twilight was extremely flanderized.

The Mane Attraction

Now this one is extremely interesting. First off, I would like to comment on what a great idea this was. This is a very real problem, artists not being able to be their true selves because the big bosses have too much control over them, even so they can't even express their own humanity. I also absolutely loved the songs, but I just don't think it had enough time to play out so it couldn't make the A+ which I feel it could have done.

My first problem with the episode was Svengallop. He's such a stereotypical annoying asshole in the most cliche way possible that it detracts from the episode. Why didn't Coloratura notice how much of a fucking jerk this guy was, I mean it's pretty god damn obvious. He speaks in the most annoying voice possible, and he is never subtle, ever. I feel the episode would have been much more effective had he been much more subtle, perhaps even appearing friendly at first, a little like Starlight Glimmer. But he is a jerk the second he steps on screen and you know exactly where the story is heading.

My second problem is that Coloratura learns the lesson way to quickly. She turns on Svengallop just after she went and told Applejack to fuck off! Also, that entire scene felt extremely forced, when Applejack told her Svengallop was controlling her she just told her she was jealous, seconds ago being best friends with Applejack. It just doesn't feel right... I feel as if she would have needed some more thinking about what Applejack had been saying, and also some more thinking and shock when she realizes who Svengallop really is. It was a great concept, but I just don't think it was executed to it's full potential.

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the episode. I loved the songs, and also Coloratura's character. She's a classic "gold hearted celebrity", and I can't help but like her, even though the writing didn't exactly work in her favor. Oh, and that last song with the CMC, great. Apart from the lyrics, they weren't symbolic enough and to obvious and directly related to the episode. But still, on the musical side, it's a lovely song, so great job.

The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows:

I know this isn't very much of a response. But this is supposed to be a quick review and I can't put it more bluntly. This was a joke of an episode. A lazy piece of trash which is just there to fill time. It is a filler episode waiting for the reveal of Shining Armor and Princess Cadances baby, which by the way does not look good. The episode was so boring and is why I hate modern FIM, episodes like these.

So, there, you have my reviews on the remaining episodes of season 5. Is my opinion of season 5 changed?

No.

Yes, there were some good episodes, but that was to be expected. We're talking about 26 episodes here, at least some of them have to be good. But yet this season still screwed me over with all the big stuff. It promised me something special, and cruelly ripped it away. From the epic trailers, to the stuff which was being revealed. This looked like it was going to be the season which was going to turn things around and where things would finally make sense. Instead it created a million more problems and brought the show to a point of absolute no return. There is no hope for this show anymore, not in the very slightest. With the CMC's cutie marks, which were basically the same in my eyes as saying that their never going to get cutie marks, because their cutie marks are about finding cutie marks, which is a downright objection to their characters and their skills, as well as the cutie marks that Lauren Faust planned them to have, which they absolutely should have had, because they are their skills. The season finale was an absolute joke, cruelly ripped away what was a great villain. Reduced the magnificent Griffon Empire into a tiny little village named Griffonstone with about 4 griffons in it with the main characters standing around in one part of the town for so fucking long. No, I still hate this season. It was an utter betrayal.

Oh and season 6. I'm glad their not even trying to make this season look good. I fell for that bullshit once and I sure as hell am not falling for it again.

Join me soon, as I take a look at the complete moronic commercialized mess of a show, Pretty Little Liars, review the new Deadpool movie, and talk about the season 6 promo, (if you've seen it, you probably know what my reaction is going to be.)
