So, I just finished Valkyrie Drive and... · 4:34am Mar 9th, 2016

Just finished watching Valkyrie Drive - Mermaid. All 12 episodes. And....I'm struck by the thought that Valkyrie Drive is what Steven Universe would be like if it actually was produced in Japan. It has nearly everything SU has: Fusions, lesbians, awesome battle scenes, and a great theme song.
What does that have to do with ponies? Well, it kind of reminds me of MLP:FIM for the simple fact that it's not at all what it looks like on the surface. On the surface, Valkyrie Drive looks like a sleazy boobfest of sexualized lesbianism and shallow pandering to an easy-to-please young male demographic. And, truth be told, it IS a boobfest, filled with sexualized lesbianism (or, to put it more simply, it's filled with uncensored oversized breasts and lesbian sex that is VERY focused on). But just like how MLP isn't just butterflies and rainbows, Valkyrie Drive is more than just T & A. If you can get past all the sexual stuff, there's actually a deep romance between the two main characters, a really good story, and some excellent fight scenes with amazing weapon designs. If sexual stuff just isn't your cup of tea, you probably won't care, but Valkyrie Drive is definitely worth a look for anyone whose into action, adventure, and romance (and yes, I recommend this series to people of BOTH genders and ANY sexuality. There's an actual PLOT (no pun intended) behind all the sexy shenanigans and it's a pretty good one).

Why am I even bothering to write a blog post about this? Because if My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has taught me anything, it's to give EVERY series a fair chance and not judge it based on how it looks on the surface. Some of the best fictional media looks terrible on the surface, but in reality it's at least tolerable. Everyone should give something a try before they decide it's not for them.
