Being a fiction writer myself, I don't see why I've yet to post a single pony-related work yet. :/ But I want to change that and get started with something! :)

I don't quite understand why I'm writing this blog either... maybe as an incentive to start, or I'm hoping for a comment with some helpful starting pointers, but I digress! It's all for momentum's sake.

I've really been inspired by so many of the works posted on this website alone. Our little community's filled to brim with talent. But you already knew that. ^^

By no means am I a particularly established author, but if you do end up writing something I can offer some tips:

Edit, edit, EDIT!! Nothing helps a first impression like a solidly written story. At the very least, the comments I received on my first story were 'it was well-written.' Established fiction-reviewing 'greats' like EQD know that good writing is one of the most important aspects of a quality work.

Make sure something happens! Drive a plot, motivate a scenario, or explore a character's thoughts. But something needs to happen, or else we as readers walk away thinking 'what was that?'

Don't try to do too much with a given story. Pick one overarching theme and stick to it. Abrupt transitions are jarring, and too much content makes the story feel dulled and artificial.

Hope these aren't too general for you, but I'm an engineer not a writer hehe. Best of luck to you in your future writing endeavors!
