Broken images · 8:18pm Feb 4th, 2016
Yes, I know that my chapter header images are broken. They are broken because apparently, despite giving you the text string needed to embed images on any site you want, you are not allowed to embed images on any site you like.
As a result of people using imgur as imgur seems to be designed for, fimfiction.net has been blocked by imgur. Imgur pics can't be hosted here anymore.
I have rehosted my thumbnails for chapter headers elsewhere, and am currently replacing them. It will take me a while because... going back and doing all of TQiD is like 68 links to update... and I'm a lil lazy. But currently in progress stories are going to be up and working with their thumbnails in minutes. Ravenloft has already been fixed because well, I like it and it's short.
Why would they block them?
3732968 I have no fucking clue. Unless they just hate bronies, because imgur specifically blocked FiMfiction.
3732982 Try to talk to them about it and find out, or just re-upload it on DA.

Huh, how weird. I can't imagine it being a traffic problem, unless someone somehow misused the domain in an attack of some sort. Might be accidental: sufficiently-advanced stupidity is indistinguishable from malice, after all.
3733054 No, not accidental. Here:
Oh and that terms of service link is to a 404 page...
Now that smells like bullshit. Wasn't imgur written in the first place as a image hosting service for use on reddit?
3733075 Yup. It was and is...
If you're writing it as a google doc, you can just put the image directly into the document when you upload it. That's how I typically put my illustrations in there, or link from DeviantArt.
3733533 I dont trust the gdocs import feature. It almost always skipps multiple paragraphs of my work and NEVER keeps the formatting. So I just write all the bb code into the actual gdoc as plane text and copy paste via ctrl A and then ctrl V. I get the embedded immage, and my formatting, no mess no fuss.
All I did was change the url in my copypastaed header. But I'll need to manually change the older stories.
3733558 Really now? Odd. I haven't ever run into that problem.
3733580 mabey they fixed that, but that's how it worked last year arround this time so yeah. i dont do it.
3733066
Ugh, how annoying! I was confused by your blog post because I wasn't getting that problem, but hours later, now I am. Gonna have to use something else...
3733620 DA is perfectly fine with image hosting and as long as it's a link to an image file it's fine. So just put it on DA, right click, copy image location, and paste into the image embedder tool. Or do the bb yourself if you know how.
3733591 There was one time when I uploaded something and it centered an entire section when it shouldn't have, but other than that, it hasn't really borked anything.
3733662 I guess it's an "YOur experiance may very." But meh, I know BB so whatev
3733066 Wow, doubleyew-tee-eff, imgur.
Edit: oh, the TOS link is valid, it's just the doofus replying to you included the period on the sentence.
I bet imgur staff are anti brony...
3734140 Oh wow! XD
3734153 Possibly.
3734162 probabilities are high
Looks like they're basically cracking down on people using imgur for anything but actual links to pages on imgur. Their embed code isn't compatible with our comments system as it requires 3rd party in-page javascript that also makes assumptions that will break w/our existing javascript. I will research if they offer an <iframe> based embed API, and if not I have a few possible ideas on how to workaround that problem...
3737846 I literally never expected an admin to comment here! Thank's for letting me know! In the meantime, maybe a site blog or a tweet or a message banner to let everyone know to use another image host for the time being is in order? If I didn't have a datacap I'd make a server for image hosting just for FiMfic... but Alaska sucks ass in terms of ISPs.

Well the hope is that I can find a solution that will at least enable the comment-expand images to load, even if in-post and in-story images have problems...
Will require a bit more research to determine how practical this is; imgur appears to have an <iframe> based way to include images as well, but I'm having very little luck finding any useful documentation on it.
3737972 If you look at their API system here, https://api.imgur.com/ it seems that they are trying to transition to a model where individual sites have to apply for the right to host images so that imgur can impose a rate of access limit, and then require you to pay them to let more uses access more images per day... Scuzzbags.

Right now the basic status is the most I can practically support/allow is an <iframe> embed similar to how youtube embeds work. I cannot however find any documentation on their site about how to use them (if you go to an image-page on imgur itself and add /embed, you get something, but it doesn't seem to size itself correctly...)
3738014 Humm... Perhaps you can have a page load the image, and then after it's loaded have a bit of HTML on your own server resize it? As in one command loads the image in, and then the next command finds that image in the client's cash and formats it appropriately. Sure, it might be a bit slower, but better slow than non-functional. (Not sure if that woul work in HTML, I only know DOS, BATCH, and BASIC >.>)

Unfortunately we don't get control over that through an <iframe>, it's up to the imgur-side of the frame to size the image correctly in the space given...
3738026 ... Remember when network things were nice and simple? Pre-cloud was nice. You didn't rely on anyone to have anything off site except for data you might like. Why do I feel like an old obsolete piece of hardware at 26?
