Tonight, DC's Legends of Tomorrow premiered on the CW. It's the most ambitious live-action television production DC has ever commissioned. It stars Arthur Darvill (Rory from Doctor Who) as time-traveling badass Rip Hunter, on a crusade to prevent Vandal Savage from destroying the world by recruiting a team of second-tier DC superheroes (and a couple of villains): The Atom, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Firestorm, White Canary, Heat Wave, and Captain Cold.
The two biggest names on this show are Arthur Darvill (mentioned above) and Brandon Routh, who you may remember as the only good live-action Superman since the turn of the century, as the Atom.
Set in the Arrowverse, LoT was anchored by the Flash/Arrow two-parter that ran back in December. The first five minutes firmly set Rip Rory up as the Doctor in all but name: a renegade Time Master who appeals to a council of decadent, indolent Time Masters to intervene in Earth's history, is denied, and steals a time ship (that can disguise itself like a TARDIS) to take matters into his own hands. Rip Rory abducts the above roster of comic book characters, lays out the situation for them, and tells them to think on it. Everyone he recruits joins the mission for their own reasons (or in one case, are dragged along unwillingly), and off our "heroes" go to save the world from a megalomaniacal immortal!
As the Waverider takes off for the 70s, Chronos--a temporal bounty hunter--shows up in 2016, chasing after Rip Rory.
In the 70s, the Vandal Savage expert Rip Rory looked up recaps the Hawkgirl/Hawkman origin story we got in the Flash/Arrow event. Meanwhile, Canary, Snart, and Heat Wave go off to get drunk and end up in the middle of a bar fight. The physical half of Firestorm is left alone on the ship when Chronos shows up and attacks. The rest of the team all quickly return to the ship, which results in the show's first team action sequence, a running firefight with Chronos...and it is GLORIOUS.
After escaping from Chronos, the team shakes down Rip Rory and gets the truth--that he's rebelled against the Time Council on a personal vengeance quest against Vandal Savage, who murdered his family, and that he recruited them because they frankly don't matter in the course of human history, so if they die or disappear it won't affect the timeline.
After some soul-searching, the team decides to continue the mission even though Rip Rory lied to them...
A grand adventure across time and space begins!
I'm pumped for this series. I wasn't 100% sure when it was backdoored in The Flash and Arrow, but Berlanti Productions hasn't failed me yet, so I decided to give it a shot, and I am SO GLAD I did. I'm definitely going to be following this. (And at some point, I really need to get caught up on Arrow...)
One last note: during the premiere, new short TV spots for Derp of Justice ran, which featured Affleck doing the absolute worst Batman voice since Bale. Yikes. Maybe the DC Cinematic Universe should try to learn the right lessons from the Marvel Universe and the DC Television Universe, because the Justice League canon movies are doing everything wrong.
Just mentioning Rory is enough for me to try and start watching the show!
Well, its good they got Rory's actor, he's already dealt with dicking around time. And, the guy who played Clark in Smallville and Man of Steel were good
just saw it and its really good. i hope that bounty hunter chrono comes back he is really cool (better than boba fett in my opinion) now all i need is a dc show to show on friday and it will be all dc every week. personally i think aflecks voice is great. mainly because its not really his voice, its hos voice through a voice modulator and i can actually understand him. but thats just my opinion. DC FOREVER!!
