Yo-Kai Watchday #7: Youkai Are Watching Your Face! · 6:03am Dec 16th, 2015

Watch! What time is it?

BLOG TIME!

WHIS!

Moth's Thoughts:

This week, I decided to experiment with the Youkai Cam feature for the first time.

Youkai Cam is, frankly, one of the dumbest extra features ever added to a game. Fortunately, it's also ridiculously easy to exploit.

Once you have access to Youkai Cam, from the game's start menu, you can choose Youkai Cam and your save file, and earn rewards through spirit photography. You fortunately don't have to save the pictures you take to your SD card. The way it works is, you snap a picture of someone's face (it has facial recognition software, so it MUST be a face), and a Youkai inspiriting that person will be revealed. Usually, around 3-4 different Youkai will show up for any given face--meaning you can't just stand around taking pictures of the same person (or yourself using the inner cam) forever.

This mechanic was clearly designed with Japanese children in mind, since Japan is a camera-obsessed culture and the average Japanese child is around at least thirty other people every day.

It's not really a mechanic that carries over well in North America, even as selfie-obsessed as we are. It especially doesn't carry over to people who, to put it bluntly, don't get out much or don't want other people to mock them for their gaming habits.

Fortunately, there's a simple way to cheat Youkai Cam. All you need is a PC with a high-resolution display and an Internet connection. I'll explain this method now.

Step 1: Open a browser tab to Google Images.

Step 2: Use the search keyword 'face'.

Step 3: Open whatever image you want of a face.

Step 4: Use the game's Youkai Cam on said face.

Step 5: Repeat as often as desired.

Also, I ran into a Crowning Moment of Funny wherein Katie breaks the fourth wall. Upon encountering a rickety old mine cart in an abandoned tunnel:

Whisper: Katie, look! It's an old mine cart! I bet if we can get it running, we can unlock a whole bunch of ancient puzzles to solve!
Katie: This isn't that kind of game.
Whisper: Well, perhaps it leads to a new respawn point!
Katie: It's not that kind of game either...

You wouldn't think a girl as cute and sweet-looking as Katie/Fumika-chan would be such a snarker...

Katie's Summer Diary #7

My dad surprised me with a present today! My very own bike!

I killed most of the day fishing up at Catfish Pond. They really ought to call it Turtle Pond, because there's so many turtles...

I decided to spend some time wandering around doing random favors for people today. There's a lot of people in town that have a lot of odd favors to ask...

I also stopped by Shoten Temple and met the priest, who knows a lot about Youkai and can perform Youkai Fusion. Fusion is a process by which two Youkai are fused into a new, stronger Youkai. Of course, I lose the Youkai Medals for the two Youkai I choose to fuse, so I have to really think hard about doing this.

I also learned about Youkai Evolution! Some Youkai evolve when they reach a certain growth level. The Medal changes to reflect the growth. My first Youkai friend, Cadin, evolved into Cadable.

One other thing I learned: you can have more than one of the same Youkai Medal at a time. That's helpful to know.

I also got the Youkai Watch upgraded to Rank C! Now I can find even more powerful Youkai!

Anyway, after I got bored with fishing and doing favors and stuff, I rode my bike out to Flower Road, which is out past the Heights in the shopping district.

Flower Road has lots of shops, including a greengrocer and a butcher, a ramen shop, and a bookstore. I blew most of my cash in one trip down Flower Road...

Oh, and the bookstore guy was upset about a visit from a businessman who wants to buy up all of Flower Road to put up a mall. Honestly! That place is a lot of peoples' livelihoods! I'm just a kid and even I know that's wrong! But there's something else bothering him, too. It seems the "Guardian Angel" of the shopping street is angry. The bookseller says my science teacher knows more about it. I find him and talk to him, and he says my classmate Lucas knows even more about it.

I can already see where this is going...

Anyway, after talking to Lucas, I head over to the abandoned hospital, where the watch starts going crazy. Checking the lens, I find a Youkai named Kyubi. He's very irritable and seems dangerously unstable. Spotting me, he challenges me to a showdown at the downtown construction site at night!

What the heck? Is this some kind of weird kung fu movie or something? Do I look like Jackie Chan?

So anyway, I headed for the construction site after nightfall, and bumped into a white dog...bear...thing named Komasan, who wanted to go inside to meet Kyubi because he just moved to the city from the countryside and doesn't have anywhere to live. But the construction site is crawling with Youkai and Komasan is scared, so I offered to let him go in with me. He gave me his Youkai Medal in gratitude.

Oh my swirls...

After a long, dangerous climb, we finally find Kyubi. But it turns out that while Kyubi is rude and a bully, he isn't the one causing problems at Flower Road. In fact, he's led us right to the culprit...

...a King Kong sized Youkai named Massiface!

Despite his enormous size, Massiface is pretty easy to defeat. You know what they say, "the bigger they are, they harder they fall"...I guess...

Anyway, Kyubi used us to defeat Massiface, who was causing trouble in his territory. Kyubi says he'll continue to protect the shopping district until I learn "the truth", and will be cheering me on from afar, then vanishes.

What is he talking about...?

Oh well, I'm sure I'll find out sooner or later! For now, I'm going home. I'm exhausted...

I shudder every time I hear the name Kyuubi.

Wait, you fused Tattletell? She's super useful; probably the best healer in the game! And I should know, I just cleared the main story today. Oh well.

By the way, at the earliest possible opportunity, go back to the construction site and recruit an Elloo; they're crazy strong. If you grind one up enough, and sit it next to other mysterious youkai, it will easily one-shot enemies for like half the game. The thing ends up with more spirit than the first S rank one you get.

3628035 For the most part, my first playthrough is just to experience the story. I'll replay the game later with Nate instead of Katie, and that'll be my "100% everything" game.

And I got a new Tattletell recently.

Ah, that's smart. But still, Elloo OP.
