The Big Apple Orchard is the family farm and orchard located not far from Gensville, home to the Appleby family. The property contains a farm house, a barn, a vegetable garden, a small ranch and several orchards, largely dedicated for apples. Among others, the Applebys also planted corns, grapes, pumpkins and recently, also oranges and pears.
So how did the farm came to be what it is now? It first began with the grandmother, whose maiden name is Jennette “Jenny” Smith. Coming from a family of successful apple cultivators in Appaloosa, the young Jennette moved to Gensville after falling out with the rest of the Smiths. Back then, Equestria was in deep economic depression thus the unemployment rate was high.
Jennette ended up jobless in the new town. But she did have some savings. With luck, she managed to buy a large piece of land for a ridiculously low price because the previous businessman owner who initially planned to commercially develop the land wanted to move abroad quickly to escape the depression.
She started gardening but was unsuccessful. The turning point came when she struck friendship with a farmer who owns a vegetable and cattle farm at the adjacent smaller land on the other side of the hill. He showed her the ropes of vegetable gardening, how to get fertilized soil from the far outskirts and was generous enough to give away sufficient amount of seeds and fertilizers to her.
So successful her garden was she became self-sufficient with some income to spare from selling her produce in town. From then on, she began working at her own apple orchard. In that long period, Jennette frequently sent pies to the farmer whom she learned is a pie-lover and at times, home-brewed ciders, as is customary to the family tradition of the Smiths. It is the neighborly thing to do she felt after all the help the farmer has given to her.
Now then, putting the long story short, the farmer and Jennette fell in love in the course of time and then got married. The two lands were combined, expanded and together the couple endeavored to build the new barn and farmhouse atop the small hill.
Unfortunately years after the house was completed, the farmer got sick with tumor which was already in the last stage, having been diagnosed far too late. Jennette stood by her husband’s side as he battled the disease for months. Until eventually the farmer succumbed to it, leaving behind his wife but not before managing to conceive a child with her. From that point on, Jennette and her son had only each other.
Being a single parent can be overly stressful and exhausting. For Jennette, it was a tough juggling act between the farm and her son. But years of her persevering paid off in the end for she raised the son to be a loving and hardworking man. His love for farm life and sympathy for his mother whose weariness was evident from her creases and roughed skin prompted the son to take over most of the chores at the farm.
With his laborious dedication, the orchards expanded and diversified, crops are planted, the farm house was painted, and a cidery is in the planning. Yet he did not do all these alone. Along the way, he met the love of his life which he eventually married. Since then the new couple carried on the pledge that the farmer could not fulfill with his wife. Born into the Applebys in the following years are McKenzie (Big Mac), then April-Jeannette (AJ) and finally Hayley Gabrielle.
Also within this period, Jennette was visited by her siblings for the first time in decades. The early meetings in Gensville were a bit rough. But for the sake of their children and grandchildren, the Smiths gradually eased up their differences with Jennete before coming to a full reconciliation. In the following years, Jennette went on to introduce the Smiths to the late Jack’s siblings whom hailed from the villages of Hollow Shades and White Tail Woods to as far as Tall Tale province. They all bonded and henceforth the two families are one.
