Moschino Barbie · 12:59pm Nov 20th, 2015
Yes, it’s a Barbie doll advert featuring the obligatory squealing kids, barely able to contain their excitement about their favorite plastic blond. Totally hot. Totally cool. Fabulosity totally included.
With one novel detail: one of the kids is a boy! This single fact meant that instead of being dismissed as an old sexist stereotype, the video spread across the internet with praise to Mattel for an inclusive approach, applauded by campaigners against gender stereotyping, and exciting further squeals of joy from all the men who ever played with Barbies, or secretly wanted to. The limited-edition doll sold out very quickly.
It turns out credit is due not to Mattel but to Italian fashion house Moschino and American designer Jeremy Scott. And Mattel wish to clarify that this is a ‘fauxmercial’
Still very cool. Now will Hasbro give us a real Saturday morning commercial featuring a little boy playing with ponies?
That kid has got the wink to the audience down, though.
Kids starting practise earlier these days.
I heard about this somewhere, and I immediately thought of ponies.
Bring it on, Hasbro!
I like the lack of sexism, but Barbie probably will not be very popular among boys because Barbies are used in role-playing and most boys realize that they will not grow up to be leggy top-heavy women.
Ponies have a much more universal appeal:
When a Big Bad comes to Equestria and the Royal Guard cannot handle it, one needs the Elements of Harmony. One needs the Mane 6 to rainbow it to death. Right now, I wish that we would have the Element-Bearers here with their Elements so that they could rainbow to death some baddies in the Middle East.
¿Did you ever see Toystory # 3? ¡Barbie rocks in Toystory # 3!
Something struck me as strange about this commercial so I rewatched it:
⸘Did you notice the cellular telephone‽
¡It came from the 1980s!
That struck me as a bit over the top for a Barbie ad, which makes sense. Still awesome to see more gender diversity.
