Should There Be Gay Characters in MLP? · 3:24am Nov 15th, 2015
In order to teach the ones that need to be taught, you must first be sure that they can hear what you're saying.
Homosexuality seems to be a pretty big topic nowadays. To answer the question I stated in the title, I do not think there should be any characters in MLP that are confirmed to be gay,
I have no problem with homosexuality or same-sex relationships. I myself am actually pansexual (in case you don't know, it's basically bisexual, but more inclusive), so it would be pretty hypocritical of me if I were homophobic (I also follow the Appledash group, as all as about four different Sunlight groups). However, just because I personally wouldn't mind if there was a gay character in MLP doesn't mean everyone else would be fine with it. If the show took a position about homosexuality, it would lose viewers no matter which side it took. If they said being gay is fine, the people who are homophobic are probably going to stop watching the show, and vise versa. And what does a parent do when they believe that a TV show is teaching their children something they believe to be bad? They don't let them watch it. If MLP started teaching kids that being gay is okay, the kids with homophobic parents aren't going to be allowed to watch it. And aren't those kids the ones who really need to be taught that lesson the most? A kid whose parents teach them it's okay to be gay doesn't need a TV show to teach them that as much as a kid whose parents teach them it's not okay to be gay does. So, the show goes with a general lesson: accept others no matter what, even if they're different. That applies to accepting gay people as well, without saying it outright. Isn't it better to teach everyone to accept others no matter what instead of teaching people who already are fine with homosexuality that homosexuality is fine? The ones who really need the messege that being gay is okay are the ones who aren't going to see it. So be vauge (is that the correct spelling? vay-g. vauge. idk) about it. Teach them acceptance without being too obvious. Throw in some characters that might be gay, throw in some clues but don't confirm it, so that the homophobes can deny it if they want (*cough* Lyra and Bon-Bon *cough*). And while I do agree that "normalizing" homosexuality by having it show up on TV shows a lot would be great, there should also be some shows that do that subtly. IDK, I'm rambling. It's late, and I'm tired.
Basically what I'm saying is this: the show should teach kids that being gay is okay, but subtly enough so that kids with homophobic parents end up watching it too, and learning. In order to teach the ones that need to be taught, you must first be sure that they can hear what you're saying.
