So, did I like this week's episode? · 5:10pm Nov 7th, 2015
...It was a Discord episode. I hated it.
I do not like Discord. I cannot stand Discord anymore. I find his antics tiring and annoying. This episode was a bloody chore to sit through. A moral like the one this episode had deserves something better.
And I'm sorry if that's upsetting to Discord's loyal legions of fans. If you still like him, keep doing so. I will not begrudge you of that enjoyment. But I will say that I have come to hate the character so much that it's started to make me hate every single role John de Lancie has ever played. And that includes Q.
I feel burned and drained after watching this. I need to go find something better to do.
Hm. Brings to mind the question: did you dislike Genie in the Aladdin TV series?
That is, a largely visual pun character?
Speaking of someone who quite likes Equestria's own Trickster God, and someone who generally disagrees with your negative reviews, I have to say that... you're right on this one.
This was easily the worst episode of this season so far for me. I was genuinely glad when it was over and actually turned off the stream before the credits just because I was that desperate to get away from it! It was nice to see Spike get it right and not get humiliated for his pains; the only things that got a snort from me were Pinkie and Discord's pop-culture costume changes and I got the impression that these were panic additions by the animation team when the director realised what a horribly dull script that he had to work with.

I never really watched that show much, but I didn't mind the genie too much. Keep in mind that I was about twenty years younger at the time, though, so things might have been different.
I rather liked the episode myself but I can see that you have your reasons and some of the pop culture stuff didn't work for me. Hey, at least you can enjoy next week's episode, right?
I love discord but i havent seen the episode yet, nor do i have the luxery of doing so without it being a blind commentary, so ill see how it goes for me later.
I just looked it up: Neal Dusedau's other episode was Princess Spike. Does that make him the new Merriwether Williams? (Since the show gurus seem to have done the right thing and kicked her out?)

Possibly. Both episodes seem to share the same basic issues.
God, I know what you mean. I ended up checking my phone halfway through because it was just getting so grating to watch. I like that Twilight finally re? realized that she is actually 'allowed' to feel things like jealousy. I do feel like this issue kinda came out of nowhere, though? I know she's been struggling with being a Princess but I didn't think that extended to not allowing herself to feel certain emotions. Maybe I'm missing something.
I paused this episode at least half a dozen times when watching it. I eventually made it through. It was a struggle...

I like Discord when used well, but this episode didn't do anything for me.
Okay. Watched episode now. I don't get it.
I think they tried too much for some of it with both 'Twilight Go Crazy' and 'DisQord' humorous ... and, well especially the end came off flat. The basic premise of Twilight misses out on an adventure and is feeling jealous works well. The DisQord admits to acting like a road-apple reversal at the end, actually kills the positive elements of the episode it goes from marginally funny to not in that space. Better ending would have been a collective pratfall that includes everyone actually, as opposed to reversed character development and swapped exclusion.
Maybe I do get it.
That still doesn't make it funny.
This one did feel a bit cliched.

There's no real comparison between Discord and Aladdin's Genie. Yes, both are visual pun based characters, but more importantly Genie was always a genuinely kind and good natured character where as Discord... well he's pretty much entirely the opposite of that. Notably in this episode he flat-out admits to having pretty much set the entire plot up by intentionally encouraging Twilight's friends not to invite her. He might claim that her getting jealous was an "accident", but even if that were true (which I doubt) he still also called it a "happy" accident and proceeded to take mocking joyful glee at her expense.
Point being, that even if he's ostensibly reformed, it's really only on the most superficial level. Which is to say he, not engaging in any large scale blatantly evil antics. Otherwise though, Discord is still just as much of a selfish jerk as he's always been. In some ways I do appreciate that the show is able to maintain at least that semblance of consistency to his character, however, I do wish it could be equally consistent with everypony else's attitude in regards to him. Unfortunately, this episode really one throws the biggest problem with "reformed" Discord into stark contrast, because he continues to prove entirely unworthy of ever having been given that second chance in the first place.
