S5E22 "What About Discord?" (BOILERS!) · 5:01pm Nov 7th, 2015
The episode opens with Twilight being a big nerd and having a nerdcation.
Twilight and Spike spent three days holed up in the library. When they finally come up for some sun, they find Rainbow Dash hanging out with Discord, laughing like crazy at his antics.
Then, at Carousel Boutique, Fluttershy is making a random joke, Discord turns her into an orange, and everypony laughs except Twilight, who isn't in on the joke.
Incidentally, add Flutterorange to the list of random things Fluttershy's been turned into.

While Twilight's feeling sour about her friends having big secret fun with Discord, they bump into him AGAIN at Sugar Cube Corner with Pinkie and AJ.
I can see Twilight snapping by the end of this episode. It's coming.
...yep, this is going to be an unholy lovechild of Feeling Pinkie Keen and Lesson Zero.
PINKIE MCFLY! That's gonna meme like CRAZY.
And Discord imparts some genuine wisdom on Twilight. That Twilight's determined to completely ignore because she's in full-blown neurosis mode.
...hoo boy. Twilight's gone full-blown Lesson Zero mode. This will NOT end well.
...you know, Twilight, if you want your friends to drink a potion that breaks a spell that doesn't exist, BE SNEAKY ABOUT IT instead of telling them straight out!
HOLY CRAP, APPLEJACK!
"What kind of fertilizer have you had your nose in, Twilight?"
That was EPIC.
Fortunately, Twilight learned her lesson this time without creating a massive magical disaster.
But then it turns out Discord engineered this whole thing. Which kind of cheapens the entire episode.
So to sum up, this was a good episode until the very end, when it reverted to Fanfic Discord and ruined what was actually a good Twilight episode. This episode will long be remembered for generating some precious memes, though, like Flutterorange and Pinkie McPie.
Well, at least we know Discord didn't use his magic to try anything, but still, some good humor.

Honestly, I don't mind the fact that Discord engineered the whole thing.
For two reasons:
1. He's done the whole "manipulate a situation so that Twilight learns a lesson" thing before.
2. He actually gets some comeuppance for it in that in the end he's the one who gets left out of the joke.
Perfect timing for the episode, considering the just-ended Bob Ross marathon on Twitch...
Yeah, the ending soured the episode a touch. Would have been better if the whole thing was a happy accident and not Discord being a troll.
3527513 It also reflects the lesson he learned in Make New Friends But Keep Discord. He learned how to deal with jealousy then and I think he deliberately shared this lesson with Twilight, especially after that quasi-quantum physics observer bit during the table scene.
Decent episode until the very end. I think this was written by the same guy who gave us "Princess Spike". If that's true, I think he needs to go, he's just not cut out for this show. There's more to it than just humor and clever references.
Was it just me or did Discord's warp trail look plaid when he was racing Rainbow Dash when Twilight first met up with them? Guess he was traveling at ludicrous speed.

I have to be blunt. I thought there wouldn't be a more worthy contender for worst Season 5 Episode than Appleloosa's Most Wanted...until this episode came along.
This was like watching Feeling Pinkie Keen all over again.

This being a chapter based entirely on a "Noodle Incident" was a clever idea. I agree with what you said though, it would have been better if they didn't reveal that Discord engineered the whole thing. Talk about subtlety.

I totally agree at your reaction to the ending. I mean, there was a point where he was teaching a lesson. AND getting his jollies on Twilight going nutso. But then he had to take the blame for it. I need a drink
The only good thing to come out of that was when he sidestepped and there was an evil mustachio'd Discord by him. The visual was the only thing I liked about him digging himself a hole.

I think this might be one of the most hated episodes in the entire series.
I actually really liked it. It was so much fun to see Twilight's dorky side again and her love for science that recently seems to have all but dissapeared. Twilight is scientific but also very emotional.
I can also see that Twilight is starting to get a bit of an ego from her position as the princess of friendship and the majesty of her castle. She feels like she should be at the center of the action of friendship and if she isn't than she feels upset.
The ending was weird to me and I didn't fully understand it. It didn't seem like Discord had engineered it but I am not really sure what to make of it. It didn't 'ruin' the episode for me but I just don't get it.
I think the issue of Twilight's new arrogance is far from over though. I am afraid though that they played their best card too early now. I would love to see more of Twilight struggling with her emotions about being a princess and being elevated so much higher than anypony else.
One thing that I was concerned about was that Discord was going to lose his mischievous nature but luckily that didn't happen. It was nice to see him again in his scheming self.
I thought the episode was very awkward. That's really the word I would use. Not bad or anything but just really awkward.
