I'd argue that the whole 'bashing Spartan skulls would disconnect them from their neural interface' isn't 100% accurate when dealing with actual gameplay in particular.
I find that when game developers have to compromise between gameplay and story they'd go with gameplay more than the story, simply using said story as motivation and reason to keep on going through the game than actually telling one.
