This was the best wording I could come up with-- "A meme is a viral phrase or image that is put into different context each time it is recycled, whether the image or the phrase is what's altered slightly. It is universally recognized by a large majority of the internet, and a meme can be anything from a funny pic of a dog that people take turns captioning, or a particular caption people put in front of different photos". She was still confused afterward.
