059 Them's Fightin' Herds Fully Funded!

Hello everyone!

I'd like to give a shoutout to this crowdfunding project you probably heard about. I haven't played Fighting is Magic much, but what little flank kicking I committed/received was a great experience, to the point where I'm willing to throw my money at the screen to have more of it. Obviously I won't be getting that with the ponies, but what Them's Fightin' Herd's is going to offer is pleasantly close enough!

Follow this link if you have planned to support the development of the game anyway, but you needed me to remind you of your generosity. Continue reading if you've been living under a rock and have no idea what I'm talking about, or if you want to find out why I decided to back it up.

Quotes in the boxes are taken directly from their Indiegogo page.

Them’s Fightin’ Herds is a 2D PC Fighting game with adorable animals in an original universe designed by Lauren Faust (producer and developer for "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic"; creator, director and developer for "Super Best Friends Forever"). It is the spiritual successor to “Fighting is Magic”, with improved gameplay mechanics and graphics, an entirely new (and awesome!) dynamic music system, a graphic lobby, and a whole bunch of new features.

What makes fighting games fun? For me, it's not the gameplay, the music, or the fact that you can pretty much mash your way to victory (though that's important, too!). The most important aspect is the characters; the story behind them and the reason they fight. In essence, every fighting game character is just a set of allowed moves and combos wrapped in a bunch of hitboxes, but there's something fun about smacking your opponents as Rose, Ibuki, or Juri, to name but a few (female) characters from the Street Fighter series. It's like creating your avatar in a MMO game. The more time you spend on the character creation screen and more lore tidbits you include in their fictional biography, the more likely you are to enjoy playing as them. They need to be fun in themselves to play in order for them to stay.

It's like visiting one of those AU fics. You instinctively feel that the yellow one is Pinkie, but something is off about her.

I firmly believe that the characters in Them’s Fightin’ Herds will be fun to play. Here's an excerpt presenting Pom (you've read it wrong, there's actually an 'M' in there), a Sheep that I quite honestly wouldn't pick if I had to choose only one character from the current roster basing solely on aesthetics. I mean, they have a fabulous reindeer, and a hyperactive alpaca! Why would I go for a shy sheep? Well, perhaps because they convinced me through a story.

Sheepkin, the citizens of the small city-state of The Meadow, are a democratic society, following the will of the masses, the herd, if you will. Problem is, all of the Sheep will vote for the very first suggestion any Sheep happens to make.

Congratulations, Pom! You are the new Fluttershy!

When they heard the call for a Key Keeper, they immediately held an election to decide if they should decide who to send. Amidst all the bleating, one small voice squeaked out an opinion. “Of course we should.” The Sheep were stunned silent. Someone who speaks their mind? Someone with their own opinion? How bold! How brave! She must be… THE BRAVEST OF THEM ALL! So a vote was called for and the decision was unanimous. The squeaky lamb, Pom, found herself charged with finding the key with only a small pack of Sheep Dog puppies to accompany her.

You can learn more about Pom, her friends, and the magical world of Equestria Fœnum on the Them’s Fightin’ Herds Indiegogo page. As I'm writing these words there's still 60-something hours to "book" your copy of the game. If deferring gratification isn't your strong suit, you can wait for the launch, but if you have a spare $15 laying around you can contribute now and, among other things, be included in the credits of the game. How cool is that? There are also packages that include other benefits, like additional digital content (character skins, accessories, soundtrack, wallpapers, artworks), even some physical stuff in the higher tiers. For $40 you'll have access to the beta once it's ready. I hope to see you there for some friendly rivalry!

"You're pretty, but can you fight?" - "Fight? Darling, I devastate."

I'm willing to bet that this game will be more fun than some of today's Triple A productions.

TAKE MY MONEY, LAUREN!!! TAKE IT ALL!!! That's me when I first saw the gameplay footage. And you're not the only one who saw the Mane six standing in their place, although, I somewhat feel that Twilight and Rarity's roles are interchangeable between our graceful reindeer and dark magic unicorn.

But still, TAKE MY MONEY!!! *throws wad of cash at computer screen* Not enough? *throws credit card and screen*

It sounds to me like Velvet is a super-sophisticated and pompous version of Rarity, but Oleander is definitely something more than just a Twilight. Dabbling in dark magic? Perhaps Lauren Faust's unspoken desire was to have Twilight turn to the Dark Side at some point in time, but she obviously couldn't write such an arc for her in the warm and friendly MLP:FiM. Hero falls, hero recovers, that sort of thing. Unbound by the setting, she could get edgy.

Frustrated with the closed mindedness of her people’s philosophies, she longed for progress and new ideas, and she found these in a book. A book of DARK MAGIC.

Embrace THE DARKNESS!

...My credit card got stuck in the miniscule space between me screen and its frame when I threw it at it.

3481528 True. But Oleander kinda reminds me of when Rarity went crazy with dark magic and started rearranging the whole town. But yeah. She'd definitely more than just Twilight. Dont mess with unicorns with dark magic! EMBRACE THE DARKNESS!

But my first call is gonna be Arizona. I like her close combat style. However, I'm more into speed than strength, so Paprika is also an option.

Please do your best to retrieve it. How else will you pay for the DLCs with additional hats and swaggy bling-blings for your characters?

Oh, right, Inspiration Manifestation, it slipped my mind.

Arizona, huh? Myself, I can't really tell. In video games with more humanoid characters I usually go for the prettiest chick with best, erm, personalitities, but choosing my main out of the six will be difficult. I have soft spot for bad girls, so Oleander seems viable, but then Velvet is the pretty one, but then again, Paprika is a friggin' alpaca! And Tianhuo is a half dragon! I think it's safe to say that this game will not have a character that no one ever picks (thanks to the limited roster, no doubt, but also great designs).

3481562 She is an alpaca. Hard to say no to that!:rainbowlaugh: Also:

Her name is Paprika and she has a lot of love to give. A LOT. If only she could find somebody to give it to. Somebody. Anybody. She’s not picky. All you need to do is have a heartbeat and she will devote her heart, her life, her very SOUL to your mere existence. And should she have her heart set on you, whatever you do, don’t run. It seems that her neediness and desperation infuses her with some kind of super strength that makes her extremely dangerous! Her hugs are crushing, her declarations of adoration will burst your eardrums. She will leap passionately into your arms – and knock you through a brick wall. Once she decides you are the love of her life, there is no escape. You are doomed. Whenever Paprika the Alpaca is in the mix, love can KILL.

Gameplay: Paprika is quick on her feet and confusing in her approach. Her attacks are bewildering and full of fluff. Don't breathe that!

This playful alpaca has tricky movement and specials to confuse opponents. Add even more variables to the fight with her randomized magic attack!

Yeah. Sounds like a character I won't be able to NOT use! But if I were going for magic, I'd probably go for Velvet. I love ice magic. But there's also Tianhuo. I love dragons. So it'll be a tough call. But I'd like to see the custom outfits and, of course, the last character: the goat! Who knows what she can do?:pinkiegasp:

And yeah, I doubt there'll be any one character we'll see more than the rest. They're all great in their own beautiful way and they each have something to appeal to different people.

3481592 Cute and deadly... I'm getting behind that. That kind of taunt would scare the enemy, not edge them on. They'd be too dizzy to fight after looking at it for ten seconds!:rainbowlaugh: Seriously, though; her love is deadly, her taunt-to-be is deadly... Paprika...
