Which concept is more frightening?
That all of your actions have consequences far beyond what you have ever imagined...
Binary Choice
A waft of air laden with the scent of baking bread drifts your way. If your mind wasn't made up before, it is now.
Following the delicious smell, you are led to a small, outdoors cafe. You find a seat at a small wooden table and have scarcely taken it when a waiter appears to take your order. The bread fresh in your mind and nostrils, you ask for it right away. The waiter smiles and informs you it will be but a moment before walking away.
You lean back in the chair, looking skyward. A few clouds, fat and grey, have drifted into the blue sky above. Your nose wrinkles at the prospect of rain ruining such a lovely day.
Your slightly soured mood is soon reversed as the waiter reappears with half a loaf of bread, steam still rising from it. You say your thanks and promptly dig into the bread, glad you decided to eat first. You think better when not on an empty stomach.
After what seems like only seconds, you find that you're licking crumbs from your fingers. Hm. Guess you were hungry than you thought.
You quickly wipe the crumbs from your face and call over the waiter, paying him what you owe. You get up as he walks away, glancing up at the sky again. One of those fat, grey clouds seems poised to block out the sun and rain... rain down upon you.
You snort. Guess everything can't be perfect.
Well, you could always look on the bright side of things. You've got a Token. You've met a lovely woman. And you have your priorities straight.
Still.... The first rain drop falls from the sky and manages to land perfectly on the tip of your nose. You flinch and swat at the air, startled. You sigh and try to make it to your new home as quickly as possible.
Still... even as more rain drops follow their fellows down to the earth, you can't help but feel like there's something looming over you. Not the rain clouds. No, more like something is hovering just above you, pulling strings and making you dance.
Several large, cold drops suddenly splash you in the face, like the cloud has trained snipers with water guns. It's just what you needed, really. Thinking about being tangled in strings again. Ha!
What a laugh. Tangled in strings.
Strings.
...Or than none of them matter in the slightest?
Thanks for indulging me. I really couldn't decide what to do at certain points in the story and thought it would be fun to force you to make the choices for me. Anyway, yes I made an Age of Ultron reference, but come on that movie is too quotable to not quote. Also, the strings are a really subtle reference to characters being pushed and tugged by the author.
So, one thing I still haven't decided yet is what to call this story. Working title is Sweet Little Ponies, but that just doesn't sound... scary enough? Vaguely threatening enough? I don't know.
Well, I do believe that this is commonly known as The Butterfly Effect.
