Season Eight Episode Reviews: Molt Down

This week is a Spike episode? What a re-”molt”-ing development this is!

Let's look at “Molt Down,” the episode that will surely be perfectly normal and have no long-lasting repercussions on a character's appearance.

Season Eight Episode Reviews: Break Up Break Down

I dread going into this week's episode. For today, we discuss matters of the heart. Romance, love, heartbreak, and all that rot. Which means we run right into the most loathsome of all fandom constructs, the kind of thing that destroys friendships and leaves the most brilliant of minds curled up helplessly in a corner, foaming from the mouth:

    SHIPPING.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force... · 4:04pm Sep 26th, 2015

...as if millions of Applejack headcanons suddenly cried out in terror, and then were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

When you see today's episode, you'll know.

Do her parents live?

3421056

No...but something people kept linking back to the parents died this day.

Oh good, her parents are still-
I MEAN, that's sad, her parents are still dead, boo hoo and such.
:twilightblush:

To be fair we already saw the hats and bows closet in a previous episode. I suppose we are free to ignore that scene though. Or any scene really, including the one in this episode.

The hat? Seriously?

Said headcanons were already on life-support the moment the hat & bows closet showed up.

Actually, it died in the novels. :B Or might've been the comics, I forget.

I am fully aware that the hate isn't anything special. Applejack has a ton of them, and just likes the style. But the whole "AJ's hat is so special because it was given to her by her dead parents before they died and died again" headcanon is one of the oldest entrenched things in the fandom, and it takes a lot of force to finally get some of the more stubborn folks to let it go. The closet full of hats and bows was just a gentle nudging to how important that specific hat actually is. The ponies tossing the torn-up, destroyed one in the trash and immediately replacing it with an exact duplicate? That's pretty much taking a train full of dynamite to the whole headcanon.

Still, those bothered by this can hold to the fact that Applejack's parents are still dead.

In all fairness tho, when has blatant canon ever stopped fic writers? :ajsmug:

Oh right. It was a bit surprising when they just threw it away, but I guess it was nice to have a book ending with hats. Plus, there had to have been a reason they kept showing all the damage that hat had taken throughout the episode.

Oh, but another possible headcanon was born the same day.

Applejack is scared of fast-moving carriages, at least when the whole street is full of 'em.

So, how exactly did her parents die..?

New headcanon: the original hat is somewhere in a place of honour at home, she just has a bunch of "work hats".

I can't hear the cross over the sound of Friendship Games.
