Alright, so the third EG movie is just around the corner and I want to get a few things off of my mind. Let me start by saying that I haven't seen any of the trailers or teasers for the film. All that I've seen are the five shorts. I don't know anything about the third movie aside from the hidden scene at the end of Rainbow Rocks. I will be watching it almost completely blind (I saw a few screen caps from the movie but that's it.)
I was actually a little disappointed by the fact that this one wasn't getting a theatrical release like the other two films. I understand that it's better that it's a direct to t.v. movie, this way more people can see it a lot sooner without having to rely on theater recordings. Still, I really liked seeing the previous movies in the theater. I think one of my favorite theater experiences of all time was listening to Under Our Spell and having that song's bass hit me like a brick wall thanks to the theater's sound system. Yeah I'm sad that it's not coming to theaters but what can you do?
From here on out I'm going to list what I want to be in the movie and what I don't want to be in it. You know what? It's actually easier to list what I don't want to see in the film because it's only one thing but very significant.
What I Don't Want
1) Human Twilight Replacing Sunset
-Seeing Rainbow Rocks left one with the impression that Sunset Shimmer was now an integral part of the human group. I was left with the impression that Sunset was the sixth member of the Human 6 as their element of magic. Human Twilight is going to be in EG3 which is a good thing. We'll get a better idea of where she was during the first two films and it makes for an interesting story element. I'm just going to go out on a limb here and say that she's going to be an antagonist for most of the film and then learn about the magic of friendship by the movie's end.
That's okay.
What I really don't want is for her to join the Human 6. Why? I figure it would be better if at the end of the movie she goes back to her own school and spreads friendship, sorta like Gilda at the end of the Season 5's episode 8. Sunset is the sixth member of the Human 6. As long as that isn't messed with then I'll be happy.
This is pretty much my biggest and only concern. As long this film can the reach the level that Rainbow Rocks achieved then I'll be satisfied.
What I Do Want
1) Flash Sentry Gets More Character Development
-If you've read my works then you probably get the idea that I do like Flash Sentry. He was a little bit better in Rainbow Rocks but still hardly got any character development. I get he's the love interest, but come on! Give the poor guy a personality! The fifth short , A Banner Day, gave Flash more personality than the two previous films combined. That short gave me hope that maybe the third film is gonna treat Flash better.
Sunset Shimmer made a huge comeback so why can't Flash Sentry?
2) Info on the Sirens
-In my opinion the Sirens were good villains. They were better villains than Sunset was in the first movie, that's for sure. I'm not asking more much with this one, a cameo will do just fine. I just don't want them to have completely disappeared off of the radar. Where'd they go at the end of Rainbow Rocks now that they have no magic? A little clarification is all I ask.
3) Competent Villains That Can Be Taken Seriously
-Continuing on the topic of villains, I believe that this one is a pretty important subject. Sunset Shimmer was an adequate villain until the end when she revealed her final plan. Take over Equestria with teenagers, seriously? It honestly isn't that hard to create better villains than Sunset Shimmer. The Sirens are proof of this. Their motivation was clear and understandable, they showed that they were actually a serious threat, and they had an interesting backstory.
I have an idea of who the villains are for EG3 but that's it. Truth be told it'd be kinda lame if it turns out that they're somehow from Equestria too. This begs the question of how DHX is going to handle the villains in this movie. Where can you go after villains who feed off of negative energy and want to enslave the human world? What's motivating the new villains? What's their end game?
This is where I think the third film is going to stumble.
4) Canterlot High Being Able To Stand On Its Own
-Like I mentioned in the previous topic, it would be a little disappointing if the only way EG3 can be interesting is if some threat from Equestria goes to the human world. I, and others that I've spoken to, wouldn't mind a spin-off Equestria Girls t.v. series. A little world building and an EG series would be solid. This can not happen, however, if Canterlot High keeps having to rely on the portal and Equestria to get interesting stories. I'm not saying that there can't be any interaction between the two worlds, just keep them separate enough so one doesn't have to solely rely on the other for story telling.
I was happy that Rainbow Rocks started in the human world and spent some time there before it showed Equestria. Hopefully, and I say this with the best intentions, EG3 spends even less time in Equestria.
5) Memorable Characters
-I think this one speaks for itself but I'll elaborate a little. I want everybody, mostly the villains, to get enough screen time. Let their personalities be fun and distinct.
That's pretty much it. I'm not expecting Friendship Games to be better than Rainbow Rocks. I just want a solid movie that's fun to watch. If it somehow turns out better than Rainbow Rocks then that's fantastic! It means that Equestria Girls is heading in the right direction. I am optimistic though and hope that it can reach the level that Rainbow Rocks did or maybe even pass it.
We won't know though until after Saturday though. Here's hoping for a good movie!
Also, if Sunset Shimmer somehow gets back together with Flash Sentry by the end of the movie then it will be the best in the series. The rest of the film can be garbage. I JUST WANT FLASHSHIMMER TO BE CANON AGAIN!
