Does It Make Me A Nerd...? · 1:15am Sep 25th, 2015
I wanna ask you guys a question, and I hope you answer it honestly.
Every Wednesday, I have to contribute to a Cultural Discussion for my Japanese class. The Discussion has a different topic week to week, and this week's happened to be about Japanese families and the pressure placed on Japanese students. Now, the post only had to be about ten sentences long, and the only research I had to do came from a wikipedia page and notes provided by Sensei. I, however, in my lust to share my two-cents, went above and beyond the call of duty and decided I'd type a bit more. It would be easy, considering I already knew a bit about both of these topics. I thought I'd give Sensei twenty sentences or so.
I ended up writing a veritable essay tallying at 901 words and easily seventy sentences.
Now, I know that's a bit excessive, but I felt very strongly about the subject matter, particularly the bit about student stress (school-age suicide in Japan is 60% higher than world average). I went a bit overboard. But, I got extra credit for it, so I think that's beyond the point. I have no doubt about whether that makes me a nerd. However, a fellow student commented on my post, saying that my research was very good, I did a great job of catching his interest, and that he'd probably do some research himself in his own spare time. He said "[he] admire how well you do your research" and "You seem very dedicated to your work". That single comment raised this day from "sub-par" to "highlight of the week". I just got so overjoyed to know that something I wrote about a country I've never been to was interesting to some Junior in Charlotte that I will likely never meet!
Something about feedback, positive or negative, really makes me feel good. It's like a high. That's partly why I post on this site: Whether you love it or hate it, just hearing you talk about it has an insanely positive effect on me. I'm telling you, man, I don't need pot legalized in my state: Just don't ban constructive criticism.
Anyway, that's about it. I gotta go work on that Intelligence chapter, and maybe a little something else that I may have discussed in a blog post
Yes.... maybe. probably still yes.
Is it nerdy to write about things which you are passionate about? I find the answer of "it depends what the topic is" to be rather unsatisfying, and a little base. If your topic was like, football or guns, somehow it's less nerdy to do a research paper on that than history? The fact remains that you were a bit enthusiastic about the subject matter and wanted to write a proper amount to fully encapsulate your interpretation of something.
Nerds are the best kind of people anyway.
3418844 Nerds make the world go round. Well, nerds and people with money. So all I need is a couple million dollars, and I'll be the most powerful man in the world!!!
3418851 a couple million? I remember when I was young and the economy was different and that figure meant something. It would get a nice house and property though. And a vehicle or two!
