Two years of observations taught me that pony names are almost always connected with their special talent and/or form of their cutiemark. Why? They have names from the beginning of their lives, and discover their special talents and gain cutiemarks later, how can their parents be so accurate with naming?
At first I thought that it's because name in Equestria have power to define destiny. And it's pretty depressing, because it means that ponies are denied of free will in some important aspects of their lives.
But after I started learning about Jewish people and their religion, I have another hypothesis. You see, Jews believe that they have two souls - their personal soul and The Soul Of Jewish Nation. Every Jewish have connection to that Soul Of Jewish Nation, and the worst punishment from God is to be cut off from this Soul. Also, they believe that this Soul is person, and this person talks with God, and also that this Soul is the great prophet. And Soul talks with God by actions of Jewish Nation, and God answers with events that happens to Jewish Nation. So Jews think that history of Jewish Nation is written dialogue with God, and thus it's sacred. Kinda weird, but perfectly logical.
So after learning this I formed another hypothesis. Ponies have such Soul Of Nation too. Maybe it existed from the beginning of their species, or it was formed in the event of Hearth's Warming, when three tribes united - I don't know. But this Soul exists, and it's great prophet. It doesn't mean that all ponies can see future (except if their connection with this Soul is very good, like Pinkie's), but sometimes every pony can. When they name their foals, they subconsciously ask Soul Of Pony Nation about the future of their foal, and Soul answers them. Not with words - with feelings, vague images and other things like this. So parents will name their foal accordingly - what they saw, what they felt and what they understood from that.
P.S. Also, I think that cutiemarks also may be work of the Soul. That would mean that Soul is a powerful mage too. And always watch every living pony. Almost god-level of power and knowledge...
