Character Lore 01: Grim Shadow · 7:00am Aug 6th, 2015
As I sat watching Fairy Tale, I thought of somethings...
What if the Alicorns were once a mighty race? What if their magic was somehow harvested for a madman's plans? How would this man be stopped?
The result is Grim Shadow, father of Sombra.
Over several millennia ago, the Alicorn species numbered in the hundred-thousands, establishing the base laws of magic and life, until one unicorn by the name of Shadow, defied every law of both... delving into what is now known as Death Magic.
He studied Alicorns, learned of their raw magic potential, and sought to make himself a god.
He forged Sombra's Scythe, a wicked wing-edge known only as 'Harvester', with it's sole enchantment being to absorb one's being and empower the wielder with the energy of his victim.
His first victim, was the Dragon known as Hollow, granting him the proof of his weapons completion, and adopting the dragons strength and physique, becoming the first Kirin in Equestrian lore.
Although he sought to make himself god of Equestria, he knew he would need help... thus he met the Maiden of Shadows, also known as Wither, and sired his only son, Sombra.
The first battle of Equestrian Fantasy tell of 'The Assault on Utopia' where the Alicorn hero defeated "Grim" and sealed him in a tomb. In all honesty... it was a massacre. Corpses strewn about the streets, blood flowing like a river, and Shadow standing among them with Harvester screaming with the souls of his victims.
As he neared his victory, he made a grave error... and challenged the bringers of Night and Day, Luna and Celestia, at the same time. His skill dwarfed both together, but Luna would sooner slay a madman than save herself. Harvester had cut into Celestia, when Luna's fingers pierced Shadow's throat ending the 'god's' life... but his death was temporary.
After absorbing most of the Alicorn population, their life forces made him the first immortal entity. Seeing how he would only prove to be a bother if he was imprisoned in Tartarus only to breakout with a vengeance, the built Canterlot upon him... using him as the cornerstone known as the 'Atlas Stone'.
But what neither princess knew, was that his blood, black as his heart, was a curse in and of itself... those exposed would seek to make themselves a god in due time... and Luna was the one who ran him through... thus began the course to Nightmare Moon.
